Title: Saban usually isn't one to run up the score...
Post by: Black Diamond Vol on September 16, 2018, 04:01:33 EDT
...unless you piss him off. Enter this dumbass Daily Mississippian writer:

http://thedmonline.com/saban-column/

They're currently up 62-7, and the 4th quarter just started.

So I fully expect John Adams to pen a similar column in a few weeks. :banghead:

I'm not sure why anyone would write that column about a coach who has won five national championships. But I really don't understand why you would write that column as your team prepares to play Saban and everyone is already speculating that your weak defense will give up 50+ to him.

What he is saying is what I have been saying for years.  Saban's success is really at recruiting.  It's very true, and multiple people are pointing out this very obvious fact, not just this guy.

Now I think his choice of words was unwise in just stating flatly that Saban is overated.   I heard a discussion of this on national talk radio a few weeks ago, and the caller was saying exactly what this columnist said.  The host said he couldn't agree that Saban was over rated or not a great coach because recruiting is important and thus even if Saban relies on recruiting it doesn't make him a "not great or over rated" coach.  The host said how he would phrase is that Saban might be over rated as a strategist or game day tactician, but that recruiting trumps both of those.  And I agree completely with that assessment.

And BDV...I doubt saban even noticed the column.

Recruiting is important, no doubt. But in my opinion there is more to Saban's success than just that.

The bottom line is he has won five national championships. Any team in America would take him in a heartbeat if they could get him.

Right.  Not saying Saban isn't good at other aspects, and in fairness I forgot to mention he is also top shelf at developing talent, of the best if not the best around.

But...saying that in strategy/tactics, about like any other really good coach out there.  And yes, we can point to his five NCs at bammer, and I will redirect to his performance at LSU, where his recruiting was not unusually good and his record was commensurate with that.  In other words, his record was more like Malzahn is today.  Which is my point.

Furthermore even Gene Chizik won the NC with a loaded team.  Nuff said!

When you have much greater talent a average coach can win big....Not saying Saban isn't a great coach and recruiter but at Mich State where he got mid level talent he wasn't a world beater.....At LSU he got great talent in a talent rich state.....At Miami he was Meh because he couldn't out talent other teams in the NFL....At Bama he's gotten better than great talent...See a pattern here?

He wouldn't come to UT...Vandy...KY...Ark etc....and win championships with the current talent level of those teams....It's all about out recruiting your competition and coaching them to be champions.

I agree with you both, whatever that's worth.

You are right about the recruiting...thats how you win championships.

Kirby is right there with Nick on that front.

Yes.  He had 9 years at bammer (8 as DC) to learn all of lil Nicky's dirty tricks.  Maybe y'all will both get the death penalty at the same time.  That would be sweet.   :naughty:

Doesn't hurt that he can recruit a top 10 class on a tank of gas either......But still.....UGA done less with more than any team in the country the past 35 plus years.
