Title: Thoughts on last night's GOT?
Post by: VinnieVOL on May 13, 2019, 08:55:36 EDT
I thought it was pretty awesome.  Battle of the Clegane bros was epic.  The only thing I have a problem with was Cerei's demise.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!

BELOW

I didn't quite buy into Dany going full Mad Queen...but it was pretty amazing to see KL just get leveled.  I thought it was pretty cool how Drogon destroyed the Red Keep and thus killed Cersei.  I guess it is fitting that Jamie and Cersei died in each others arms, but I was still hoping Jaime could get back on track to his redemption.  Jaime pretty much came full circle and Dany ended up avenging her fathers death, even though she didn't know it at the time.  I guess there will be some pretty intense scenes with Jon coming up in the next episode.  I really wish they could have done this season in 2 seasons, but I guess the cash was running out.  I really do appreciate the high production value of the show.  However the current state of fans bellyaching and complaining is being relentlessly hyped.

I thought it was excellent. Dany had to be the Mad Queen. It was meant to be. It will be interesting to see how they get her off of the iron throne. Although I'm sure that she has no followers who like her after she torched half of them.

Yeah I really wish seasons 7 and 8 were 10 ep's, and that there were more seasons coming.

I'm very much enjoying this season, just doesn't feel like there's enough time to wrap everything up.

Pretty insane to see Dany unleash Drogon's power... like you said King's Landing has been the location of supreme strength in the realm for 8 seasons now and she leveled it in minutes.   :wtf:

The pacing is way off. As I understand it, HBO had nothing to do with the decision to cut it to 6 episodes this season, that was all D&D's call. And it was a mistake.

But even so, I think those 6 could've been put to better use. Unlike many, I can buy in to Dany going Mad Queen. Her family history is well-established, and they've been dropping hints about it since Season 1. But I think they could've taken a little more time this year to explore her descent into insanity. The first two episodes could've easily been combined into one- the Battle of Winterfell didn't need two weeks of lead-up. One of those eps could've been put to better use as an extra week between the two big battles. Dany had just lost Jorah (who, along with Barriston, had always been there to pull her back from the ledge in the past). She'd lost yet another one of her "children", and she had just watched her best friend get beheaded in front of her. She had just found out that Jon had the better claim, and Varys had betrayed her (I assume that he had already sent many ravens throughout the kingdom before he was executed last night). They should have taken an extra week to show how all of this affected her leading up to the big battle.

I agree with everything you are saying.... I'm enjoying it though.

I think the memes after tonight may break the internet.

Yes, I've read spoilers. I couldn't resist. :banghead:

After the first episode, I thought it was just one where it was catching everything up, I liked episode two.  Episode three was such an abomination I read the spoilers for the rest of the season.  It allowed me to be at peace and accept the disappointment to come.  :bawl:

That was...even worse than I expected.

At least Ghost got the ending he deserved. :dunno:

I will say this: All else aside, Peter Dinklage absolutely slayed it this season. He's head and shoulders better than any other actor on that show, and it's really evident whenever anyone else has a one on one scene with him.

Could it have been better?  Sure.  I didn't hate it.  These writers were never going to bring it and live up to GRRM.  I felt like I sort of adjust led my expectations accordingly.  Plus, such is life.  For some reason Seinfeld comes to mind, with it's finale.  Sometimes things just can't live up to the standards they set for themselves.

Overall, I enjoyed it and was fine with everyone's ending spot except Arya.. That was kind of a head scratcher.

Note I said "I'm fine" with it.  Not blown away by any means.  But I don't think it was an abomination like many appear to.

My feelings exactly..... final season as a whole could have been so much better than it was... but I enjoyed it ok.

You know what I think I hated most? The little meta-moment with Sam's book. "A song of ice and fire"? Really?

Would "There and back again" have been too on-the-nose? :frown:

There were some cheesy moments for sure... Drogon's scene comes to mind for me.

For me at least this season seemed rushed and didn't make sense in some respects - Arya appearing seemingly out of nowhere to kill the Night King, Dany's quick decent into madness, Tyrion betraying Varys, Jamie's odd arc turn, King Bran etc.  Though to be honest Dany didn't sound that crazed in episode 6, but that may just be me.  If there had been a few more episodes in S07 or S08 to flesh it out, it might have felt earned.  Maybe D&D were in a hurry to get to Star Wars.  I agree that the actors did great with what they had.

There was a legend about a hero, Azor Ahai, who plunges a blade into his love's chest to help combat a coming darkness.

I liked the finale. Not great, but good. There's no way it could be exciting after the previous two episodes. They referred back to some things in earlier episodes such as Arya asking "what's west of Westeros?"

There was no way Dani was going to sit on the Iron Throne. Madness ran in the family.

Clearly, Arya used the face thing to avenge the Red Wedding.

It was rushed at the end for sure.  But I'm still thankful for the whole experience, I'd never read the books and never watched the show until last year lol... I remember saying to my wife as we were trying to find something to binge.. "well this Game of Thrones is pretty popular".   Boy was I in for a treat.  Now I'm working on the books to too.

I read all five books, and I regret doing so. Oh, they were enjoyable enough (though Feast was a pretty dry read), but I never would've invested all that time into a story had I thought that GRRM would never finish it. And it's pretty clear now that he won't. We're going on 9 years since ADWD came out, and there's still no indication that he's even close to finishing Winds of Winter. And even when he does, he's still got at LEAST one to go after that (he's indicated that it could be two). He'll assume room temperature before he finishes this story.

I understand the frustration, but I don't see it as a complete waste if time... Right?  I mean, you enjoyed them at the time.

Many are saying watching all 8 seasons now feels like a waste of time because if their feelings on the finale.  But it brought of years of enjoyment, so I guess it's just a matter of how you look at it.
