Well, let’s see...
Manning to Kent on the first play against Bama.
Billy Ratliff forces and recovers a fumble against Ark.
Any one of Al Wilson’s forced fumbles against Florida.
Tee Martin to Peerless Price against FSU.
2  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Mike Leach about UT on: August 02, 2019, 03:48:55 EDT
Pruit wasn’t really a gamble at the time. If you recall, we were the laughing stock of ESPN up to, during and after Schiano. Aside from a few high school coaches, there was nothing available.

I know criticizing Fulmer is close to heresy at Tennessee right now, but just for the sake of conversation...based on what? I'm not saying he's doing a bad job necessarily, but I haven't seen anything that makes me sit up and say, "Wow, he's a great AD." Imo, the Pruitt hire was a huge gamble that was made because Fulmer wanted his thumbprint on the program. I'm not saying Pruitt won't be successful. I hope he wins national championships here and everyone thinks Fulmer is the greatest AD the university has ever had. I'm very much in wait-and-see mode on Pruitt. But IF he doesn't turn this thing around, IMO that's directly on Fulmer and risks his UT legacy completely. Aside from Pruitt, Fulmer gave Barnes a contract that is still making me wince (as much as I loved the guy and wanted to keep him), and got completely neutered by the old guard on the women's side and made an underwhelming hire to replace Holly. Again, don't get me wrong...I want Harper to succeed. I fondly remember the days when she was the PG of those great Summitt teams, and I spent a lot of time watching her brother, Brent, play ball for Jeff Lebo at TTU. The Jolly family is a solid all-American family from small-town Middle Tennessee. It'll be easy to like Harper and want her to succeed...I'm just saying I think it was a big gamble for the sake of hiring someone from within the UT family.

John Currie set himself up for the fall with his attempt to hire Greg Schiano. At the very least, the Schiano flirtation was a sign that he was totally tone-deaf with regard to the culture of UT, and that entire coaching search was a debacle. But, IMO, the "coup" that UT fans are still celebrating was NOT what this university needed. I admire Fulmer for the '90s. I always will, much in the same way I admire UT figures like John Majors and Andy Kelly. But I don't trust him or his motives...no more than I guess most UT fans trust the Jim Haslam and his motives.

Time will tell...I'm just not sold on Fulmer as an AD right now. I hope he proves me wrong.

I’m glad he’s showing confidence, and emphasizing the defensive effort. Anyone who needs bullitin board material (and this is pretty tame) at this point in the season shouldn’t be here.

Here it is Christmas time, we’ve got an exciting basketball team ranked #3 nationally, and the talk is what our record will be going into next years Florida game?? Sheesh! How about we talk about whipping the Gators on the hardwood a couple of times, and maybe throw in a couple over the Kayuts for good measure??

Missed the game yesterday - how did we look? Is Turner back?

Quarterback draw, when the OL sucks? Run it a second time, just to be sure it won’t work?

It's going to be a tough challenge. I think we have some talent on D. The lack of experience at CB is concerning, but I feel good about our LBs and safeties, and not too terrible about our guys up front. And I know we have far, far better coaches who've had 9 months to prepare. I don't expect our defense to be world-beaters, but if we aren't far better than the D we saw against Missouri and Vandy, I'll be severely disappointed.

I think the key to beating WVU is going to be ball control to eat some clock and keep Grier on the sideline, and hope for a couple of lucky breaks.

Having Kirkland back is big - if he stays healthy it will be interesting to see what difference good coaching makes. I can remember how Al Wilson could change a game. Also, our inability to run last year meant our D was on the field a LOT - never a good thing.
13  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: how can the O Line NOT be better? on: August 29, 2018, 06:35:35 EDT
This is Tennessee football. NEVER ask if things can get worse. Because the answer is always an emphatic YES, no matter what position you're talking about.

I would remind you that this time last year we were saying the defense couldn't get any worse, and Bob Shoop subsequently told us to hold his beer.

Hard to sink lower than 0-8 in the SEC.

There was talk that Mississippi State was the team no one wanted to meet in the tournament. I contend it was the other team there tonight but no one wants to meet...

16  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: It looks like UT and UNC both had big game hangovers..... on: December 21, 2017, 09:11:56 EST
Sandwiched between two ACC opponents, last game before Christmas, dead atmosphere with the students away on break.  And Furman's a really good team, one of the preseason favorites to win the SoCon.  This one had all the ingredients of the classic trap game.  I'm just happy we got out with the W.

Looked a lot better than UNC!  Refreshing to have an exciting team to watch again.
17  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: UT early signing day info as of 2 pm on: December 21, 2017, 03:40:13 EST
I don't fault him for not coming to Tennessee, but he signed with a bitter rival. If he had gone to Clemson, I could've wished him well. As it is, if he does well, our rival is doing well. No offense to him, but I hope he flops.

I understand, but I can't go that far.  I hope we return a fumble 98 yards for a TD, and beat them on a last-minute play-action pass to the FB.  And MacKensie and Tuttle stuff em on 4th and one.
18  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: UT early signing day info as of 2 pm on: December 20, 2017, 11:32:52 EST
Hope he rides the pine for four years!

Disappointing for sure, but hard to criticize his decision not to go to a school that went 0-8 in the SEC.  At this point, GA could certainly be seen as giving him a better shot at an NFL contract.
19  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: S&C coach Gullickson officially out... on: December 13, 2017, 07:58:41 EST
Actually there was a study on number of plays vs. injuries that came out a couple years ago, and it showed a clear correlation.  I can't find it now, but really there is no need, it's just common sense.

Regardless it likely was more than that, but I am certain it was a contributor.  I'll keep looking for the study. and post if I find it.  I am certain it's somewhere below also.

If you can shut down the run, you're gonna get a lot of 3 and outs, thereby reducing your defensive snaps.  Conversely, if you're giving up 5 yards a carry, you're gonna be out there longer AND you're gonna get fatigued, amplifying the injury potential.  On offense, running success shortens the game by keeping the clock running, and it allows you to play more aggressively, shifting the likelihood of injuries to the defense.
20  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Pruitt is very hard-nosed. Here's a couple of articles that explains... on: December 11, 2017, 05:48:40 EST
You seem to get the point of why I posted the links. They were to show you just how hard-nosed he is, and not concerned with who this writer thinks should be coach, which is beside the point.

Personally, I like that intensity very much. That personality description is also the same one for Nick Saban.

BG

Yup.  That intensity is going to grate on those who want to skate by.  If you want to be the best, those people need to be pushed so that they either step up or step out.

I paid little attention to what the DN writer had to say after he made the halfhearted case that Tee and Steele would've been better choices.

That certainly put it in perspective...
22  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Seriously, how is Tee any more risky than the names out there right now? on: December 07, 2017, 03:38:09 EST
A more serious answer...Wonderlic doesn't mean much IMO.  There are other players including QBs who have scored low but gone on to great things.

Intelligence tests are controversial anyway.

Two of the lowest 5 wonderlic scores in history went on to have outstanding NFL careers.

We're talking about Tee as a COACH here - I'd be surprised if many successful coaches scored low.
23  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Seriously, how is Tee any more risky than the names out there right now? on: December 07, 2017, 01:11:01 EST
Surprised you went there...actually NOT surprised you went there. But since you did bring up the educational system, in this particular case there could be much more compelling questions to ask about the "educational system."

Edited to say, think about it...

BG

Tennessee and Alabama fans debating educational standards...I'll take irony for $1000, Alex.
24  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Guarantano just tweeted this on: December 02, 2017, 05:45:49 EST
The thing is, there’s not that many quality coaches left out there that are available, and there’s more competition every day. Having Fulmer as AD adds an element of mentorship not typically available for a HC.
25  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Fulmer to be new AD and here are the power players..... on: December 01, 2017, 10:12:16 EST
Dave Hooker writes separately on Gridiron Now and lays the wood on Fulmer, buying into the conspiracy theory that Fulmer sabotaged the coaching search.

I don't know that I would completely dismiss the idea, except for this: if Currie was truly Haslam's lackey, and Fulmer was kept at arm's length during the search as a result of that, how was he able to pull off such a coup?

Exactly - how did Fulmer force him to offer Scianno?
