I completely agree. I coached for over 25 years and some kids are gamers. As a coach, though, you have to have "effort" from those guys in practice in order to give them significant playing time in games - they cannot be allowed to just go through the motions in practice. To do otherwise undermines your program, imo, and costs you in the long run.

Having said that, if transfers become automatic and without a loss of eligibility, I feel that it could make it much tougher for college coaches to instill that in athletes.
2  Sports / VTTW Message Board / After listening to Pruitt's post game press conference, I got to thinking.... on: Today at 05:09:47 AM
It seems to me that he's suggesting that some of the talented young players aren't giving enough effort in practice.  Maybe I'm reading his responses incorrectly, but that's what it sounded like to me.  My thoughts here aren't really directed at whether of not that perspective is correct, but how it could affect teams moving forward in the "transfer portal" era that I feel we are headed toward.  The NCAA has already tentatively approved a proposal that next August any athlete in any sport will be allowed a "one-time transfer" without having to sit out a year.  I fear that "free-agency" is right around the corner for college athletics.

All of that is a lead-in to my point: it may become very difficult for teams to keep talented players who don't play because of their practice habits.  A 4 or 5 star player who enters a program and doesn't see the field because he isn't giving enough effort in practice could potentially just up and leave for other programs where he feels that he could play based solely on talent.  Coaches are not only going to have to recruit future players, they are going to have to re-recruit players on their current roster.

Just as an additional thought, I completely believe that playing time must be earned through effort in practice.

At 2-3 in this wacky 10 game season, I would think that you'd start developing for the future.  That would, at least to me, suggest that you'd start working toward the QB of the future (unless we are looking at the QB next year already  ).
4  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: So Mizzou beats KY 20-10 on: Today at 02:16:31 AM
I was really hoping that CJP was the guy - I still hold on to that hope.

After five games of this screwed up season, however, I'm having doubts.  Not only has this staff failed to develop any decent QB play but the defense is terrible - and that is Pruitt's expertise.  We should at least be better defensively and I just don't see it.

In game decisions are also suspect, I think, but I'm no football coach.

If its close against Auburn, better count on the Tigers getting some help from the SEC officials.  Twice they have gotten W's on obvious mistakes.

How could anyone watch that replay today and not see that the player touched that football on the kickoff?  In days past, you'd say "Well, that was tough to see."  In today's game, with replay, there can be no doubt.

Said that the next UT defensive line coach has some house cleaning to take care of in the NFL. Indicated he could be hired next week, as I understood it. Bo Davis?
7  Sports / VTTW Message Board / 2 of Auburn's 3 wins are thanks to SEC officiating. on: Yesterday at 09:18:45 PM
Ole Miss got hosed. That ball was clearly touched. How does replay not see that?
8  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Henry T's Instagram post has VQ in an uproar. on: Yesterday at 08:57:55 PM
I think Chandler's eyes were on the LOS looking for the hole. He was clearly expecting the ball, as I remember seeing it.

I agree completely with both of you!
10  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: UT starting QB's record since 1980 on: October 22, 2020, 01:21:27 EDT
I sent those numbers to a friend who is very down on JG.  He checked and says that the numbers are incorrect.  He says JG is actually 12-17.  I'm not gonna invest the time to check those numbers either, but I would not be surprised if he is right (information on the internet is very often inaccurate - bon Jour).  The 12-17 is still not good, but it would at least be better than 9-17.

According to this friend, JG is 18-20 in games that he has played in and 6-3 when coming off the bench.

There are a lot of variables in those statistics, but DANG!!!
12  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Do Bama and UGA get fined this week? on: October 20, 2020, 06:05:11 EDT
I saw multiple coaches without masks on during today's games. Does it really hurt the coaches to fine them? Seems a lot of SEC schools will be fined for failing to follow prescribed protocols during the weeks practices. You know all of them would never report falsely to protect a star player.

As I understand it, the school is fined - not the coach.  As I read the report, $100K will be withheld from UT's SEC money pool because of the fine.  That fine will increase with each infraction.

Whether is hurts the coaches is not my point, really.  My point is that Kirby and Saban both got in the face of an official, on national TV, with their masks down.  If you are going to fine coaches for that, fine!  So long as the rule is enforced equitably (we all know how equitable the SEC office is when it concerns the cash cows).
13  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Henry T's Instagram post has VQ in an uproar. on: October 20, 2020, 04:07:20 EDT
Earlier this evening, he posted a picture of Bailey with fingers crossed.  It's been deleted now, supposedly, but it seemed to suggest that he wants HB to take over the QB role.

Saban and Kirby have both been shown in an official's face without their mask.  Does this warrant a $100K fine?
16  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Could be worse, we could have a QB throw five (5) picks (2 pick 6) on: October 18, 2020, 02:47:20 EDT
Ark is so well coached....With a new coach...new system and transfer QB. From what I've seen the 2nd best defense in the SEC. Anyone that thinks that will be a sure win for us is badly mistaken.

I don't see any sure wins for this team, I'm very sad to say.
17  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: So, if you had to make the call...... on: October 18, 2020, 02:43:36 EDT
I canít watch next week if JG trots out as the starter. Iíll turn it off and go hiking. There comes a point where you just get tired of subjecting yourself to the misery.

I completely agree with this.  I'm not into hiking, but hopefully it will be a good day for golf.  I'm tired of watching JG at QB for UT.

Personally, I'm not in favor of the idea of putting HB in the starting role against the likes of Bama.  With the way our offensive line is playing, I would not want that to be his first start here.  There's always the chance that it could go really well, but odds are that it will not.  Just my $0.02 worth.
18  Sports / VTTW Message Board / So, if you had to make the call...... on: October 17, 2020, 09:29:12 EDT
I understand that as fans we don't have access to all of the information, but knowing only the finite facts that we do know who would be your likely strategy at QB next week?

1. JG as usual
2. Shrout and Maurer depending on their play
3. Shrout and Maurer for Bama depending on the play of each - Bailey after the bye week
4. Bailey to build for the future
5. Other (want to explain?)

I like option 3

Defense has been on the field practically the entire second half.
20  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Game Thread: UK on: October 17, 2020, 08:23:59 EDT
No choice now. Our QB room must really be bad.
21  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Game Thread: UK on: October 17, 2020, 08:13:05 EDT
I'm just sick of watching JG play QB at Tennessee.

Rumors also out today that multiple Gator players may be ready to "opt out" for the season. It is the internet, so 'Bon Jour', but the rumors were floating before the announcement by UF today.

2017. The last Hog SEC victory.

In other news, Iowa St beat Oklahoma in Ames for the first time since 1960.
