1  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Another commitment.... on: May 12, 2020, 05:03:06 EDT
Recruiting has been insane lately. Thread on another board discussing how insiders in the AD telling friends that CJP is definitely the best recruiter on the staff was interesting. If true, the social distancing has been a plus for Vols football as it has freed him up to recruit more.
2  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Free read from Hubbs regarding this past week on: May 02, 2020, 05:06:17 EDT
It was an incredible week of recruiting. Hopefully the ball is rolling downhill now and it just continues!!

Bag men not practicing social distancing.

Thanks for the laugh. I needed that.

While I don't know you personally, Granny, I've read enough from you to confidently say that I think you are a kind and caring person. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you!
6  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Who is working at their place of work, at home or not working?....... on: March 18, 2020, 06:08:46 EDT
I'm a teacher in the public schools, so I am home (but I'm doing a lot more manual labor than I normally do at school - those honey-do's never seem to decrease). My wife is a retired educator so she's home also. We've been isolated since a trip to the grocery store on Saturday evening.

I'm blessed to not be in the position of having to make a choice between work and social isolation, as of now. We are passing on organized church services and I have put my 3-days a week local group golf games on hold for now. Its a choice that I feel is right for me but I won't condemn those who feel that they can't do likewise.

My hope and prayer is that a short time from now all of this can be put behind us and that death rates are low.

I had problems loading the site yesterday. Everything seems fine today.
8  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Church cancellations? on: March 14, 2020, 06:49:39 EDT
So, Governor Lee is recommending that churches and other gatherings find alternates methods for their events but public schools should remain open unless numbers are problematic in individual counties? I'm finding it difficult to see the reasoniing here.

While young people are not likely to be in the high risk group for this virus, they can be very effective carriers of the virus.  The whole purpose of limited activity, as I understand it, is to retard the rapid spread of the virus yet school aged children will still potentially be exposed and transmit the virus to family members and others with whom they come in contact.

If all major sources of virus spreading are not minimized, what is the point?  Am I missing something?
9  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Augusta has postponed all events. on: March 13, 2020, 05:30:20 EDT
I've heard talk of playing it in the fall during the normal Asian swing of the tour schedule.
10  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Augusta has postponed all events. on: March 13, 2020, 05:11:03 EDT
The two best weeks in sports are now done for 2020 it seems (NCAA tournament first week and the Masters).

The Players championship has also been cancelled.

All high school sports can't be far behind, I think.
11  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: WOW. No fans will be at the NCAA tourneys. on: March 12, 2020, 10:54:47 EDT
Future trivia question:  Which NCAA D1 basketball team won the last game of the 2019/2020 season but was not declared the national champions?  Kansas Sate
12  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: And now the SEC Tourney is cancelled on: March 12, 2020, 09:30:24 EDT
I stayed up watching the Big 12 tourney last night until the last game was over.  I did that, even though I had no real interest in the game, because I had a feeling that it was going to be the last NCAA basketball game played during the 2019/20 season.
13  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: WOW. No fans will be at the NCAA tourneys. on: March 12, 2020, 09:28:21 EDT
If I had money to wager, I'd bet that the decision to cancel the NCAA tourney was made yesterday (possibly even earlier?).  I believe that the announcement was a matter of timing and PR concerns.

It is now much easier for them to make that announcement.
14  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: WOW. No fans will be at the NCAA tourneys. on: March 12, 2020, 05:06:15 EDT
I agree with you, SmokeyJoe.  If the spread of this can be slowed, the medical facilities have a chance to treat more people who are infected.  If the spread accelerates, triage will be required and more people will have to go untreated.  As bad as it is, I think cancelling events is the proper strategy.

I'm watching all of the NCAA hoops I can tonight because I would not be too surprised if tonight might end up being the finish to the season.  It's gonna be tough to keep playing now that the NBA has suspended their season.
15  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: How about that!?!...Vols beat Kentucky at Rupp.* on: March 04, 2020, 10:03:09 EST
According to their message board, Hagans refused to go back into the game last night when asked by at least two coaches. Supposedly he told Cal something along the lines of "Why go back in? So you can take me out again?"

A close friend who has a relative that was seated two rows behind the UK bench says that he verified the report. Says he witnessed the "discussion" (argument?).

Somehow when the Cats basketball teams are in turmoil, my world spins much smoother on its axis.

**Addendum: Had I been on that bench I would have sent him to the locker room immediately.
16  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: How about that!?!...Vols beat Kentucky at Rupp.* on: March 04, 2020, 05:41:04 EST
Johnson played pretty well, so I'll agree to your 6-man possibility somewhat. Uros couldn't start for our local high school girls team right now. I'm hoping he has tons of hidden potential, though. If so, he's definitely good at something - hiding his potential.
17  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: How about that!?!...Vols beat Kentucky at Rupp.* on: March 04, 2020, 05:30:03 EST
Amazing effort after being down 17.  Outscored them by 25 from that point, basically playing with a 5-man team (Johnson gave the team some good minutes tonight and did contribute 8 points).

Beating UK in basketball is always amazing.  Beating them in Rupp with a less talented team that has almost no bench help is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!!

GO BIG ORANGE!!!!!

*Addendum:  I did hate to see all of those upset UK fans having to leave early.  I felt really bad for them.
18  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Whew! Vols hang on to beat the Gators.* on: March 02, 2020, 10:22:52 EST
No chance at all for a run in the SECT if the bench cannot respond. That's a grueling week if you have a deep bench.
19  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Whew! Vols hang on to beat the Gators.* on: March 02, 2020, 01:15:04 EST
Uros has been a dud so far.

That's probably being kind.

You can't coach a kid to be 7', but it's also tough to watch a 7' player get his shot blocked twice in the same possession, both times right at the rim.

I trust CRB, so I'll just hope that another year of coaching and work will really improve his game.
20  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Whew! Vols hang on to beat the Gators.* on: March 01, 2020, 02:53:53 EST
Would have been the second time recently that we squandered a huge lead against a top opponent (the other being the 17 point lead we blew at Auburn).  At least Barnes took a TO early this time.  Glad we pulled it out, but the team needs to learn how to "put on more steam" with a big lead, instead of playing not to lose.

It is really difficult to put on more steam when you've been on the floor for almost the entire game. We are getting very little from the bench.

Yesterday: 0 bench points, 11 total bench minutes.

JJJ played 40 minutes, Pons 39, Bowden 38, Fulky 36, Santiago 34 (all from ESPN box score)
21  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: We let that one get away... on: February 16, 2020, 05:36:14 EST
Shot 17-28 FTs......Had 20 TOs. That gets your ass beat.

Barnes has a bad habit he's been know for for years.....He goes to a prevent offense in tight games and it bites him in the ass a lot. He went to it tonight with us up 6 with under 3 minutes to play. Dribble....dribble...dribble and then try to get into a offense with 7 seconds left on the play clock....RUN YOUR DANG offense and go win the game. USC outscored us 11-3 down the stretch when it was gut check time. Barnes needs to also take some blame for this one.

I agree.

I'm a CRB fan but I don't always agree with his decisions. Running down the shot clock with an 18 year old freshman PG and a team that struggles to score with a full 30 second shot clock might not be the best strategy.

They played hard and gave good effort, it just wasn't enough. If USC could have made free throws it wouldn't have been close.

The foul on Fulkerson could have gone either way I thought, but I felt like karma might have gotten us on that one (I'm not sure that the charge he drew at our place was the greatest call). I haven't watched a replay of the play tbh. Regardless, that call didn't beat this team - when you have 20 turnovers and still have a chance to win on the road you are fortunate to be that close.
22  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: How do you feel about players entering the transfer portal not being able to on: February 13, 2020, 05:51:28 EST
I don't like the transfer portal for undergrads.  If it was up to me, all undergrads would always be required to sit a year if you transferred - no exceptions.

I think that this is fast approaching a 'free agency' type of environment in college sports.  When you make exceptions, you open the door.

That's harsh for the athletes, I know, and I wish that there was a way to fairly govern it but I just don't see it happening.
23  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: I smell BACON!!! Tennessee 82 - BBQ Pork 61 on: February 12, 2020, 04:52:06 EST
I'm going all positive on this one. UT made shots. That's a must for this team to compete.  Good showing tonight.
24  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: We need a little more efficient offense.* on: February 09, 2020, 06:56:02 EST
UT took 9 more shots from the floor than UK and made 6 less.

UT took 16 more 3's than UK and only made 2 more than they did.

We don't shoot it very well to begin with and it gets even tougher when they are from the arc.

We need a good BIG who can score inside.

Ga State will live in infamy, unfortunately.
Nick Saban and Louisiana-Monroe said hello.
