It's a hard knock life... for Vols..

I'm not sure it's going to happen, but we must do whatever we can to beat Vandy. Two illustrations why:

1.) On the morning show on 104.5 this AM, they were on VU's campus and they were talking about the VU - AU game and Kevin Ingram wondered aloud if local fans of other programs were rooting for Vandy and Wycheck says, "How can they not?" Good Lord, I almost lost my mind. I wanted to call in and ask Frank if he was rooting for a lot of Maryland's rivals to win league games. The problem with Nashville media (and Lyn has said this for a long time about the Titans) is that when they adopt a team, they expect all local people to get on board or be damned.

2.) Obviously I turned the station... to 97.1, where I could listen to Bob and Tom. Their sports guy who does the sports updates makes a big deal about VU and AU and then at the very end says, "UT plays Saturday night, but who cares."

Now... true Vandy fans I don't begrudge... but the bandwagon sure is filling up fast. Don't look now, but VU was fortunate to beat SC and fortunate to beat Ole Miss, and they are last in the SEC in total offense and last in total defense.

I am now officially rooting for AU to put a smackdown on the West Enders.

We have to beat them. Living amongst the front runners is going to be unbearable if we don't.

It was those types of Vandy fans (and others) who initially turned me off of the Titans. If you remember, when the Oilers first came to Tennessee, lots of bandwagon fans from your neck of the woods jumped aboard. I remember reading in print and online that Tennessee finally had a good football program to pull for. That barb (and many more) was obviously directed at UT and its fans. No way in hell was I ever going to align myself with that group of fans so to this day the Titans can't lose often enough to keep me satisfied.

We didn't have an NFL presence here, and many people (including me) were ready for one. I root for the Titans not because anybody tells me I should but because they are my team.

The Titans are the best or second-best team in the entire NFL right now, and it is killing you.

Three things

1) We should beat Vandy every year.

2) I actually pull for the 'Dores. Perhaps it's because I grew up in Maryville, but I never thought of them as a rival. DiNardo ticked me off, but that was just a marketing ploy.

3) I hated the Titans the first two years, but now pull for them. Formerly I just pulled for UT guys, not any one team. I still pull for the UT guys first, but I can actually say I'm a fan who makes time to watch the Titans now.

On #2... I usually pull for Vandy in every game except UT, but this tone I get from the Nashville community is enough to change that. VU is easy to root for when they suck because they're our lovable punching bags. But right now they suck less than we do. That is subject to change.

I grew up rooting for Vanderbilt, not UT, in basketball. Dad still prefers Vandy in basketball and UT in football. Not me, not anymore... they lost me when they wouldn't let Ron Mercer come to school there just to prove a point.

I listen to 104.5 every morning. People are actually calling in saying that Vol fans are jumping on the vandy bandwagon. I know lots of Vol fans and NOT ONE has become a dore fan or is pulling for them in any fashion. (And if they did they wouldn't be a true Vol fan anyway-just a bandwagon rider) What a crock of sh*t. Vandy need to get knocked back into the real world asap. If AU does it, fine. If not, we will.

I work right across the street from vandy and can't stomach this crap. I'm pretty sure this is one of the signs of the apocalypse.

I think you should stop smoking crack.  You know, I probably would be a Titan fan by now if it wasn't for Frank Wycheck, who I really liked when he played but I can't stand that guy.  Well, Frank Wycheck and all the damn people who say "WHAT??? You don't root for the Titans???  Well, F-U! blah, blah, blah".  It's funny, my husband used to be a Titan fan, but he knows who butters his biscuits so he roots for the Colts now.

Not sure I understand.  You don't like front runners (bandwagon fans), or you don't like Vandy??  If you don't like front runners, then you must pull for UT to lose during those times when UT is doing well, because we all know that UT has (had) its share of front running fans/media, and then some.  Can't see why you begrudge Vandy as a program, because they are hardly ever competitive, have been down forever, and everyone sort of likes an underdog.  And their temporary year of fame would bring additional respect to the bench strength of the SEC, and would be good for your local economy.  So, UT beating Vandy this year isn't imperative.  Rather, if there were ever to be a year for UT to lose to Vandy, it would be this type of year.  Everyone would benefit.

He hates the Nashville media that think if you live in Middle TN you have to root for Vandy.  He hates fans that are now jumping on the Vandy bandwagon and acting like #badword#s.  It is imperative we beat them in order to get them to STFU.

We do agree on Frank. I loved Frank as a player. He's horrible...absolutely HORRIBLE... as a talk show host. He pisses me off weekly. And as an analyst he can't carry Pay Ryan's jock. Mike Keith carries Frank on his back each and every week.

My wife says that Frank was made by God to be looked at, not heard.

You know me... I don't begrudge people not rooting for the Titans. It doesn't make somebody a bad person. But I don't like the people (not on this board, the people I know in real life) who tell me that I'm not a real Titans fan, that I'm a bandwagon fan, or that the team alienated UT people. It isn't the team that alienated UT people... it's the media who did that. The Nashville media has always been irritated that Nashville wasn't the center of sports in the state, and that's why they pump the Titans and Preds so much. The media is the one who tries to big-league the Knoxville people and Knoxville media because Nashville is a "professional sports" town, not a college town.

So the team got a bad rap because they tried to play to the whole state by calling it the "Tennessee" Titans, while it was the media in Nashville who was being smug about having the team.

Based on my experience, though, easily half of the Titans fan base also roots for UT.

First of all, you took my statement and twisted into something incoherent and not even related to what I meant. A front running fan is a fan who only roots for a team when they are doing well. A real fan sticks with their team through good and bad. I can't even begin to see how you got your first couple of sentences out of what I was saying. No, I do not like front running UT fans, either. Of course we have our share. If you think UGa doesn't, then you haven't been to Chattanooga lately.

Second of all, you've got to be kidding on why I don't like Vandy. Do you like Georgia Tech? That one is easy for everybody to see.

Third of all, it is never a good time for Tennessee to lose to anybody in anything, least of all Vandy. And I LOL at the point you make about it positively affecting the local economy.
