My thoughts on this (useless) thread issue
I disagree with 101.  I do not think that Denton intentionaly intends to upstage the game.  The pregame ritual is one that I follow along with to this day.
The third and the river statement he got in trouble for but at the time I, and probably 90% of the stadium felt was funny and accurate as heck.  It made granny holtz stomp around some more and IMO that was a good thing!

If a poster thinks Denton is a grandstanding stadium announcer I'd like to introduce them to several different stadium announcers in the SEC, starting with the jerk at Williams Bryce, who really is in the same league as the hobnailed boot.  And it's another  to the jerk on the mike!  The uga and L$U stadium announcers aren't far behind.

However, IMO time has passed Denton by and he should step down.  He is having more and more difficulty with names and just following the game, though he is not near as bad as blob.

And if asked about PA announcers at some other places, I would have made similar comments.  There are several in the SEC, and in college football across the board, who are walking sideshows.  In my opinion, and this is my opinion, PA announcers should be like referees - if they do a good job you should never even notice they are there.  Just pronounce the name correctly, give the down and distance, and let folks enjoy the game they came to watch.  Most folks there don't have to be told what they are seeing.

Anyone who wants to talk about Denton's mispronunciations and inaccuracies have accurate points. I might even agree that it's about time for him to retire, even though I'll be sad to see him go from a nostalgic standpoint. But I just think it's hilarious to try to argue that he makes his job a sideshow. That's just silly, and we have nothing to base it on other than the fact that he says "Pay these prices and please pay no more..." and that's so far before the game starts that half the folks aren't even in the stadium.

BOM, you seem to be taking this personally, and it isn't intended that way.  My opinion is that Denton is over the top, and apparently i'm not alone in that opinion.  I respect your opinion, but I just happen not to agree with it.

Yes, I believe he is a sideshow.  I also believe that that, added with the fact that he can't take the time to learn the proper pronounciation of the names of the players from the school that he works for indicates that he isn't taking his job very seriously at this point in his career.  It is an embarrassment.

I am not taking it personally at all. The only thing I take personal around here are Revolver's old soul digs. I'm waiting on the day I can catch him at a tailgate and throw him in the river. I just would like to see some indication of how Denton is so far over the top because, frankly, the notion astounds me. If you were arguing that he's too old, too inaccurate, etc., I would've agreed but wouldn't have said much beyond my original post on this thread. Maybe there are a lot of people who think he's over the top, but I've never heard that from anyone else. The only complaints I hear are about his mistakes. And most of that comes from the VolNation forum, where they'd curse the soul of Gen. Neyland at a given opportunity.

Its Tailgating Time in Tennessee (AGAIN)!!!

My personal favorite was when he called Texas Tech the "Red Devils".

Personally, I think Bobby's incompetence (or inebriation...potato, potahto) adds a certain charm to our gameday experience, and I'll be sad to see him go.

I will refuse to mention Ciclon in this thread ... oops......

SHOW YOUR GOLD!!! (whoever that clown was)

"Its another Gamechicken.." crowd responds "First Down"

Pirate and I started doing "Its Another Volunteer (or Tennessee)" and then "First Down" last year when we went to the Columbia game.  By the end of the first time UT had the ball we had the whole section of UT Fans doing it and then the next section over was doing it.  The USC fans below us were not happy that we had coopted their PA Announcer's BS.   Some of them even gave me lots of dirty looks but I just smiled and wished them well.  We had fun in Columbia last year.

Two BD Highlights from Saturday:

Poor guy from Montana whose first name was Caleb...became "Ka-leeb". The guy went from Christianity to Islam in five seconds.

But the best was the introduction of the new coaching staffs at halftime. He mispronounced Serrano's assistants so badly they were laughing on the field.

That was both sad and funny at the same time.

This thread is comical on several different levels.

It would be great to have more than two examples in his career ("Pay these prices" and "3rd and the river") of how Denton has provided such shocking personal commentary.
Those two examples hardly amount to a "side show".

And I've honestly never even noticed most of these mispronunciations.

There was a game in the last 10 years or so that the referee could not decide what color we were wearing. He announced a penalty as on the "yellow team," the fans booed, then next he tried "gold team," and of course the fans were even more pissed. So when we picked up a first down, Denton announced that it was "first and ten for the ORANGE team." The crowd loved it.

Like ReVOLver, I have no special attachment to Denton, and I'm not as amused by the "pay these prices" thing as many other UT fans seem to be. But I have to admit, both "3rd and the river" and "ORANGE team" amused the heck out of me. I loved it and did not feel he was out of bounds with his choice of words.

Ah yes, I remember the "ORANGE team" call.  Indeed, the crowd loved it.

I guess it just boils down to personal taste.

But I do think calling him a side show is way over the top.
