But the defense looks just as slow.

I didn't see the game, but that was about what I expected.  The offense has a lot of early enrollees, while most of our best defensive recruits aren't on campus yet.  I don't think it's any exaggeration to say that our team this year will only go as far as this recruiting class can take them.

Refresh my memory, who do we have coming in for the defense in the summer who can make an impact immediately?

Help coming on the DL, LB and secondary, especially at safety

The DL players especially will see early action

The defense looked to mostly be comprised of backups as a lot of likely fall starters were held out of game to give reps and experience to backups so coaches can evaluate them.  It is troubling to see slow response and missed tackles, but like the subject of this post, faster young ones are arriving this summer.  The improvement in speed and skill on offense is evident.  Defense on the front seven is strength and recognition.  Speed in secondary is critical.  I hope the defensive players coming have fundamental tackling skills. Most LBs and secondary are prone to run fast, hit hard, and hope the guy falls method of tackling.

I just think the offensive skill players are just flat out faster than the defense.  And that is something UT has not had for years except for a couple of WRs.

Odds are, D will be greatly improved next year (2015) and just bitchin' in 2016.  This season there look to be some growing pains.

I can't wait to see some of the kids above in action though, especially Bates.
