Overall:  Improved.  The pace was quicker than last year but is still not as quick as the Cinti offenses were.  For the most part we kept it vanilla, the throw back pass (which was wide freaking open and coulda, shoulda been a TD) being the exception.  We ran three different elements off the fly sweep, two effectively.  While for the most part it ddn't show up in the stat sheet the TE will be more involved in the offense.  Bottom line is a good workman like effort but much improvement is required.

OL:  The talent level is a large drop off from last year.  There were numerous blown assignments, particularly in the interior. Missed blocks (one led to a sack), failure to sustain blocks (one led to a sack and another blew up a good potential screen pass).  They had essentially zero push on run plays.  Way too much pressure on the QB all too often.  For the most part they did handle the sometimes wierd defenses that were thrown at them.  Far, far, far too many penalties on the OL, must be corrected.

QB:  Worley had a good game.  He played smart, rarely putting the ball in danger.  Needs to work the deep balls, though in his defense on at least one deep pass the receiver (Malone) just did not get a good release at the line.  Threw well in general.  One flare pass in the 3rd was an absolute work of art.  Managed the game well.  Bottom line is we can, and will, win with him at QB.

RB:  Lane started but the RB is Hurd.  Remember in '97 we complained tha Lewis didn't start till the 4th game due to pass blocking?  Well, Hurd was the RB for the majority of the plass plays last night and for the most part did a good job picking up the blitzs.  Lane ran better in limited opportunities but the future, and most likely the present is Hurd.  Lane is the short yardage RB.  Young saw limited duty.  Lane showed his ability on his TD run.  Hurd showed his ability in the open field on the screen pass, leaving at least three defender jocks on the field in his wake.

WR:  WOW, tremendous improvemnt over last year.  Howard played all three positions and played them well.  He just flat gets open, as does Smith.  Pearson is/will be a star.  North drew a lot of attention.  Malone needs work on getting releases at the line.  Croom played well.  Worley had receivers to throw to all night, when he had time to throw.  We threw a lot of bubble/slip screen type passes to allow the receivers to make playes.  Smith took one down the sideline that led to a TD.  Pearson took one for a TD and in the prcoess led the stadium announcer to ask for a jock cleanup on the 10 as the defender was grasping for air.  Better blocking by the WR could have led to bigger plays on those passes.  Bottom line is the strength of the offense is at WR.

TE:  Big improvement. A few times we had both Wolf and Helm in the game.  Blocking can use improvement.  We ran a few combination routes with multiple TEs, effectively (one for a TD).  Bottom line is a large upgrade at TE.

We are going to score points on offense.

Hurd showed had 2-3 very nice runs last night (including the screen) that .... I know it's a small sample...but just seemed a level above anything we have had at UT.  Lane is very good, and I was happy with Neal last year as well, but even with the small sample I am already forming an opinion that Hurd is the most talented back we have had since Taco Boy (and that is based on his NFL performance, not his time with the Vols.   ).

Premature I know, but it's nice to have a legit 5 Star at RB again.
