Why they were trying to redshirt Dobbs?  He is obviously our best QB.  We possibly would have a couple of more wins if he had been playing. ..can't believe he is just now developed to this level

I like CBJ with his fire and his intensity, but for the life of me,I'm having flash backs this year of 2005 with Fulmer as coach and Sanders calling the offensive shots..

1. We don't know what goes on in practice. 2. I think Dobbs fits Butch's offensive scheme better than Worley but didn't want to waste a year of Dobbs' eligibility with a team that wasn't ready to run that scheme. As he brings in more good recruits, the offense will be better suited for his scheme.

At least, that's the way I interpret it. Whether I'm right or wrong, or whether Butch is right or wrong, I don't know. If I did, I would be a highly paid college football coach.

the spring and fall practice indicated Dobbs was third ranked.
Given Worley's performance before the injury last year and early this year it made sense.
In retrospect I think Worley was hurt worse at UGA than was released as he was not the same subsequent.

If Worley sees the field again unless Dobbs is hurt....Butch needs to be fired....shot....then fired again!

Dobbs will be the QB next year...get him ready now and he gives us the best chance to get to 6 wins and a bowl. Worley will be gone and Peterman will be playing somewhere like Austin Peay.....most likely as a backup there too.

i'm not convinced that Dobbs is the answer the rest of this year and for sure next year.
There are a LOT of holes in his game, primarily in passing and game management.  Yes he sparked the team last night and had some success.  However, is passing game is still very limited in execution, as a minimum and he made a LOT of mistakes in game management.  The latter can be corrected with film study and more reps in practice and games.  The former has been an issue from day 1 of him being on campus.  I remain convinced our QB that will lead us back is not on campus yet.

Granny, if you have a VQ account go read Brent's middle of the night post.  Essentially what he said was nobody who had watch the team practice the last three months had seen Dobbs' performance last night coming.

I don't have access to that,  but thanks for the info. .I thought he played very well considering the position he was thrown into.   Yes he made mistakes,  but his mobility adds something we needed  and gives us better options.

I concur he has much room for improvement,  but perhaps less so in game situations than other options. Worley is easily the best from end of play to start if play, and has performed admirably when healthy, but has the advantage of time and reps. We'll see if Dobbs benefits from those as well.

I will stand by my feelings that our QB of next year is not on campus yet, but that said, - Dobbs sure fits what Butch is trying to do offensively better than any other QB currently on the roster.  Why he hasn't been at least getting the practice reps with the first team that Peterman has gotten is a mystery.

Love Butch as a recruiter, but I am still miffed a many of the on the field coaching decisions that he and his staff are making.  They are still coaching like they are at a MAC/CUSA/Big East type school.

With the offensive line play that we have, Dobbs is our best chance to be successful.  With average, maybe be even slightly below average O line play, Worley could have been much better and we would maybe be 5-3. We simply do not have anywhere near that quality play from our line.

Time after time last night, Dobbs turned what would have been sacks with Worley into positive yardage. His mobility put less pressure on the line and created more opportunities for the offense. He has issues with accuracy at times (while at other times making some really crisp and spot-on passes), but his ability to run eliminates the pin-your-ears back defensive mentality that we have seen from defenses so far this season.

In the future, defenses will prepare for this new aspect of our offensive scheme and we may see less productivity than against Bama (I hope it is the opposite), but defenses will have a completely different offensive dynamic to prepare for.  Dobbs can run the option, he can evade the rush, and he can make the throws (just needs to be a little more consistent).

Here's hoping we go 4-0 with him at QB!

EDIT:  Let's make that 5-0, counting the bowl game!!!

I'm with Pirate. Dobbs certainly provided a spark last night and he definitely neutralizes our poor OL play a bit, while also being a better fit for the offensive system as far as the read option goes, but throwing the ball will still be ugly. Dobbs threw the ball well and made good decisions in the first half but in the second half, as UT opened up the offense a little more, he struggled mightily with ball placement and decision making. I'm not convinced Dobbs is even the guy to get us to bowl eligibility, let alone back into the SEC East race in future seasons.

The good news is that UT won't face another defense like Alabama's (Mizzou is probably the closest), which will help Dobbs. The bad news is that every opponent left on the schedule will be able to scheme for Dobbs much better than Alabama was able to.

If Dobbs is healthy he will be the starter to start the season next year. He might not be by mid-season. I see no way we start a true freshman next year right off the bat.

We spent a large part of the last full series showing things, running several variants of things, I'm sure to give future DCs something to think about

What I thought last night, and still think, is that no one, not even Butch Jones, knows what is going to happen until Dobbs actually goes in last night.  I seem to recall raving practice reviews of Jonathan Crompton in 2008, but then he was one of the biggest busts I can recall.

Also the points that we are breaking in a new OL above by a couple posters are well taken.  Why not start the season with an experienced guy while you are breaking in a new OL?  Why put the pressure on Dobbs from day 1?  Let Worley take the slings this year, let Dobbs continue to prepare for the future.

Finally, I also agree that while I was excited by Dobbs last year based on the bammer game, he kind of disappointed the rest of the year.  He did give us another option with his legs, but his passing was anemic to say the least.  Given that track record, I am not surprised Worley got the nod.  I am surprised Peterman was ahead of Dobbs, but since Butch announced on Thursday that they both would play, I am wondering if having Peterman ahead of Dobbs wasn't a bit of a subterfuge.  Who knows...

Having said all that, Dobbs clearly gave us a big spark and was much more effective than the post uga-injury Worley and Peterman.  I am excited to see how he plays against USCe.

I thought he looked better last night than at any point last season, and I hope that continues this coming week.

There's a disturbance in the force. I agree with Pirate, Herb, and Creek all at the same time.    Pardon me while I re-evaluate my position on these matters.

For that to be true either Peterman or an incoming freshman that is two years behind developmentally beats him out. Not very likely.

And I would counter that the precedence is certainly there.  UT has had several true freshmen QBs play early in their careers.

Peterman won't be the starter - period.

Whether or not Dobbs will depends on how he follows up Saturday's performance.  Keep in mine that he regressed after playing well in his first couple of games last year.  He was hideous against Vanderbilt.

I will now speak hierarchy. I am not a true believer and follower of the old adage "How you perform in practice is how you perform in a game." So players are practice player and know how to perform in practice to get to start and play 1st team. When the game starts and pressure of actually executing it starts, the real player comes out. Sometimes coaches are able to see through "practice" players and play talent. And sometimes you have to put a player in a pressure cooker "like Saturday) to see what happens. Dobbs just may be one of those guys that absorbs the knowledge and experience of practice and does not excel until pressure is on. The media and people on web sites have said Dobbs had a horrible evaluations in spring and fall camps. Yet, in the spring game, he was obviously the best QB. Now even though Worley and Peterman graded out better in practices, he goes out plays the a decent game against Bama. These are things that drive a coach like Butch and the OC crazy. You preach to your players you have to get better and show it in practice, practice makes perfect, and if you cannot show it in practice you never will in a game. Then he goes out, makes mistakes, but the good things he did almost outweigh the bad. The coaches never saw this coming. Unfortunately, knowing what is coming and what you need to do, but not being able to execute looks to be Peterman's problem.

As a Mechanical Engineer with 41 years experience, I understand somewhat the things Dobbs is going through. As an engineer, you have to be analytical and not jump to judgments based only on instinct, but through experience. As a QB, you have to make judgments instantly and go on instinct. You do not have time to be analytical. I can tell Dobbs is a different QB and better than last year. I think he can get better with game experience. He may be a player that is only going to improve with game experience and it may never show up in practice. All I can think about is the number of times I heard Fulmer and Dooley say to the media what a good week of practice the team had and how we were ready for the challenge. Then the team would go out and lay an egg and look miserable. It does not matter what you learn in practice if you cannot execute and apply it.

Of course I'm not aware.  Why even ask such a stupid question?

I know why, but it's against board rules to say.

I have to agree with Live Orange on this one.  UT would have need to sign a superstar recruit QB in the 2015 class in order to unseat Dobbs.  I don't think Dormandy meets that criteria.  That is, assuming Dobbs progresses at a reasonable rate of development based off of his Bama game performance.

Well, as we saw last year, Dobbs came in for the 2nd half at bammer and gave us spark, got everyone excited...and then was mediocre at best for the rest of the year.  I hope that's not the case again, but it's possible.  I agree that if he finishes strong, he's the starter next year.  But if not, it will probably be a three man race.

Don't rule out Dormady just because he's not so highly rated.  I think with the way offenses have evolved in the past few years, dual threat QBs have a chance to do very well in the right offense, even if they weren't 4 or 5 star guys in HS.  Exhibits A and B: Just two of your last three Heisman winners, RG3 and Johnny Football (both 3*'s).  And this year's frontrunner Dak Prescott was a 3*, too.

Having said all that, I think Jauan Jennings may be the guy to beat (if Dobbs can't hold on to the job).  He's listed as an athlete, and most have assumed up until recently that he would play DB in college.  But he's done so well at QB this year, many think that's where he'll land at UT.  I saw one of his games on TV, and he's pretty electrifying.

Sounds like we have or will have some options at QB that fit well into the Jones offense, which is nice.  Wasn't so until recently.
