Here's how you do it.  Inflate the balls to Tommy's preferred 10.5 psi.  Park 'em in a dry sauna (125F) for a few hours or overnight.  ~15 min before the pressure check, take 'em out and toss em a few times in the cold air so the skin of the ball is back at room temp.  The air inside is still hot so it reads ~13 psi.  Around game time, the same balls are magically down to 10.5 psi, except for the one you kept at standard pressure, just in case.

Didn't you watch Flaky Brady's press conference yesterday? This topic isn't even deserving of its own thread here. It's not like it's ISIS. No one's dying.

If you use the Ideal Gas Law, the terms n, R, and V (volume) cancel out so you are left with P1/P2 = T1/T2. This leaves T1 = (P1 x T2)/P2. Convert psi to atmospheres and °F to °K.
12.5 psi = 0.850625 atm; 10.5 psi = 0.714525 atm ; 50° F = 283.161° K. Then T1 = (0.850625 x 283.161)/0.714525 = 337.096° K or 147.1° F.

Therefore, air had to let out of the balls because at 12.5 psi the air temperature would have to be 147.1° F.

I am a retired professional mechanical engineer so you can tell I have too much time on my hands. I was just curious how this could occur without interference. So it is obvious someone deflated the balls in the 1st half, but according to media the referees had the balls re-inflated at the half. And it was the 2nd half that the Patriots hammered the Colts. So other that providing more proof that the Patriots are cheating scum bags, the results would not be changed since both sides played with similar conditions. Much ado about nothing. Everyone also already knows the NFL (like the NCAA) will not punish favorite sons and organizations with nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

Worry and complain about important things in life.

Rocky, I used Cameron Hydraulic Data conversion table that converts psig to atmospheres. It already includes the psig to psia conversion in the multiplier.

Teh point is that Bellichick is a scumbag.  This is the second time or third actually, because there were two instances of video cheating, that he has been caught.

Likely he has done far worse and gotten away with it.

It is pretty amazing that in the middle of a season, their defense will go from near the bottom of the leauge to the best in the league in just one game, as if by magic.

Whatever...fizzle Bellichick and the Patriots and their girlie-man QB anyway.

Ya'll need to get over this since it is now confirmed that nothing was done against the rules.

That's good enough for me. If the cheater says that he didn't cheat, then why should I quesiton it?

Yes Stogie....I am a geek and a nerd. But after being an engineer for 41 years, I just cannot stop even if retired. Frankly, I think the initial temperature is too high. The ideal gas law is too conservative IMO, but it does give a good idea if you are in the ball park.

Regardless, the Patriots got caught breaking the rules. IMO they would have beaten the Colts anyway.

Well, as an engineer for 41 years, you've made a mistake.  You convert psiG to psiA by adding one atmosphere.  That makes the pressure ratio 27.2/25.2 or about 1.08, and the pressure at filling quite comfortably within that of a hot sauna.

You are right Rocky. I looked at Cameron and it says psi. So I did forgot to include 1 atmo in the conversion. You lose skills when you do not apply them every day. So It becomes T1 = (1.850625 x 283.161)/1.714525 = 305.633° K or 90.47° F.  This is less than a sauna. What they should have recorded was the weight because that would tell you if air was let out. I need to start doing more mental exercises before I lose all my engineering skills.

No worries, '73.  The interesting thing is this is quite easily done, and both Brady and Belichick have been 100% truthful in everything they've said.  Doesn't make it right, though.

We have a "person of interest" in the case.  I hope it didn't hurt too bad when pretty girl #12 threw him under that bus.

I could have scripted this. Some schlub takes the rap, probably loses his job but somehow is secretly taken care of financially.

Maybe they'll set him up Hawaii next door to the Spygate videographer.  AND he'll get free razors for life.  Not a bad deal...

Actually Victor Kiam no longer owns the Patriots...I thought the same but he was the Gillette guy.  He sold out in 93 or so to Robert Kraft, whose fortune is in paper and pulp products.

Makes perfect sense to anyone who has ever been downwind of a paper mill.
