If you think about it ESPN is coming full circle. When they started, they only showed "fringe" sports- Australian Rules Football, Lumberjack competitions, Dwarf tossing and such.  They rose to truly become the sports leader, conquering not just TV, but radio, print, and online media as well.  But now their bubble is bursting, and they're going to go out with more fringe stuff- spelling bees, cheerleading competitions, and, apparently, poetry readings.
