Interesting choice of words: "An exhaustive search is underway".  Present tense, not future.  Hopefully this means that the exhaustive search has been underway for a while, and will be completed very soon.

Or am I reading too much into it?

Well, if I were some idiots on another board I would say, well he wrote that a few hours after firing him so he could have started the search in that time frame so it would be "on going"

As I reminded our student-athletes when I met with them earlier today, unless you hear news directly from me, do not assume it to be accurate.

There are a couple dozen trolls on VN who beg to differ, and seemingly thousands of rubes hanging on their every word.
