Jarrett Guarantano performed well despite suspect pass protection. Josh Palmer, who is emerging as a legit No. 1 WR, had a nice touchdown catch, same for Ty Chandler.

Overall, the OL was just OK and allowed too many sacks. Inexperienced DL wasn’t much better defending the run, though. Jerome Carvin got a long look at center while freshman Wanya Morris repped almost exclusively at left tackle. Morris was solid overall.

JT Shrout had his moments but also had a poor red zone INT.

Chandler was also solid as a runner but Jeremy Banks apparently really showcased his skills and had multiple strong runs. Multiple folks were buzzing about Banks afterwards.

Tight end Dominick Wood-Anderson had a good scrimmage, trucking a couple defenders after a few catches.

To expand a bit, Guarantano was solid Saturday, completing passes from various arm angles despite pretty steady pressure. He found DWA several times, with one observing noting the tight end made more plays Saturday night than he had all last season.

Guarantano had a couple touchdowns but his day ended on a sour note, tossing a poor interception during the final 2-minute drill.

It definitely sounds like JT Shrout has taken the lead in the backup quarterback competition. Jim Chaney apparently really likes Shrout’s arm and makeup. The California native is still prone to mistakes (had a red zone INT yesterday), but has improved throughout the first couple weeks this spring.

The Vols repped a bunch of guys up front, but the main first-team OL consisted of freshman Wanya Morris at LT, Ryan Johnson at LG, Jerome Carvin at center, K’Rojhn Calbert at RG and Marcus Tatum at RT. Riley Locklear also got plenty of work with the group at LG. While Morris was solid, it sounds like Calbert was the team’s most physical lineman Saturday.

Jeremy Banks turned some heads with his physicality at tailback, not surprising considering he flashed a year ago. If his ball security issues are behind him, the sophomore will be a big factor in the tailback rotation.

Eric Gray, who returned to the practice field for the first time Thursday, did not participate in the scrimmage. Neither did freshman defensive back Tyus Fields, who just started practicing this week, or Baylen Buchanan, who has been limited all spring.

Josh Palmer’s touchdown reception was one of the highlights of the day, a long catch and run for a score.

Tennessee’s front-seven was very up and down, per sources. The unit did pressure Guarantano and Shrout, but it had real issues stopping the run (both Ty Chandler and Banks). Quavaris Crouch got lots of work with the 2s at linebacker, but didn’t had a strong day. Conversely, freshman safety Jaylen McCollough was among those in the secondary (Alontae Taylor and Bryce Thompson) who impressed folks. McCollough can play safety or nickel and his physicality and natural instincts showed up Saturday.
