So, Governor Lee is recommending that churches and other gatherings find alternates methods for their events but public schools should remain open unless numbers are problematic in individual counties? I'm finding it difficult to see the reasoniing here.

While young people are not likely to be in the high risk group for this virus, they can be very effective carriers of the virus.  The whole purpose of limited activity, as I understand it, is to retard the rapid spread of the virus yet school aged children will still potentially be exposed and transmit the virus to family members and others with whom they come in contact.

If all major sources of virus spreading are not minimized, what is the point?  Am I missing something?

I don't think you're missing the point. The Department of Education is completely off the page that the governor and just about everyone else in North America are on right now. The guidance for school closings that the department published today is mind-boggling, IMO. It's catching a lot of flack already, from educators and the general public alike. I would expect to see a course-reversal soon. Like you said, if we're not going all-in on this "social distancing" stuff, what's the point?

I'm on a group text on this very subject with all 3 of my older sisters who are all teachers and let's just say they agree with your questioning of the current strategy as it pertains to schools.

My sister teaches in Louisville KY and all schools there are closed until further notice......I read this morning the Gov. of IL has ordered all schools in the state closed until at least March 30th.
