I think I've told this story before, but I got busted inside Neyland as a high school sophomore. One of our math classes (geometry, I think) was on the campus for a special event and some buddies and I decided to "sneak" into Neyland. We walked right in and all was good until we decided to go down to the field to check it out. Some big guy yelled at us and asked us just what in the world we thought we were doing. I thought we were in big trouble.
But it turned out good. When he found out we were just young UT fans with stars in our eyes, he gave us a grand tour of the stadium. He told us a lot about the stadium and about UT football, but never told us his name. It wasn't until I got my Football Time in Tennessee magazine a few weeks later that I realized our tour guide was a defensive line coach named John Chavis.
I always liked him after that, even if I learned to despise his third down defense after he became the DC.
