I make some variation of this same post every year. I know it was a tragedy when those UK kids perished in that DUI accident- and maybe at the time, having the winner of the game hoisting an alcohol-related trophy wasn't the best message to convey. But it's been 16 years now. And the time for knee-jerk reactions is long past. IMO, UK forfeited their right to be all self-rightous about the Beer Barrel when this happened: I wonder if they would be so inflexible on this matter if their team had actually won the freaking game every now and then?

to sterilize all hurtful, offensive issues by proclaiming them politically incorrect is not going to make the world safer or better! In fact I propose that it does the opposite and makes our populace less able to discern right from wrong for themselves and therefore more susceptible to being deceived by some articulate, persuasive orator or some popular movement.

How does George's song go "I poured the last drop from Callipari's toes"?

Bring it back. It's not like it actually has beer in it.
And I would think twice, if I was in charge of marketing for a university, before I would allow our brand to be placed on an alcohol product. Especially liquor.

With the reason it was stopped I doubt it will ever be brought back.

I know this board is only read by us old farts who still use such crude media, but...
If some UT fraternity and some UK fraternity were to grow a couple pairs of balls they could reinstate the beer barrel tradition without the administrations having to sanction it. Just paint a barrel ala the old days and declare that it will be awarded c/o the relevant fraternity to whichever school wins.
It is a disgrace that the tradition was ever taken away and yes, the administrations will never buck the PC tide to reinstate a cool tradition.
But if we had some students with even a marginal amount of backbone and organizational capacity that wouldn't matter.

I think just about every BIG game has some kind of trophy attached to it. I can't wait to see what they come up with for that grand old traditional Nebraska/Rutgers rivalry.

I agree. We had this discussion several years ago. Either go back to the beer barrel or go the Davy Crocket - Daniel Boone route and use a musket. Nothing wrong with that either. Wisconsin has the battle for Paul Bunyons Axe. No difference here.

A GUN? Are you kidding? Why, that would cause those young, impressionable college students to shoot each other!
