He has paid the price and he doesn't have to pay anymore. He was good and he was a VFL.

Gameday will never be the same.  Denton will always be in my memories of Neyland.

I know some didn't like him, and he definitely had his, uh, less than lucid moments, but Bobby was a big part of what made the Neyland experience unique.  If you go to a lot of road games, you start to realize that all the other PA guys sounded pretty much the same.  Not Bobby.  His booming voice was instantly recognizable in the stadium, on TV, or from a half mile away as you were walking to the game.  Gameday just won't be the same without him.  UT football became a little less special today. :bawl:

I also remember him (and Claude "The Cat" Thomlinson, who was then the Pride's announcer) on WIVK back in the day.

That was the first gameday tradition I learned and took to heart.

A friend and his wife went with us to one of the games this past season. He had never been inside Neyland Stadium before, and he kept wanting to get inside before kickoff because, "I want to be sure to hear them say 'pay no more.'"

Bobby may have had a bigger impact than any other stadium PA announcer ever.

Your name came in in conversation this week.
Something about a tailgate at YouTee's old office, a certain potent sustenance and a serenade.

I wish someone had a recording of "4th and the RIVER!" and the associated crowd reaction.  That was a classic moment for me.

I'm not gonna lie. Watching that chokes me up.

I think it was after the Georgia game last year when Bobby flubbed big time that I posted on here that it might be close to time for him to step aside. I believe it was Vinnie who posted at the time saying essentially that Bobby had earned the right to stick around as long as he wanted to because Tennessee football would never be the same without him. And, of course, he was right. I knew it at the time and more or less felt the same way at the time. But I'll tell you this: I'd rather Bobby Denton be around for another 10 years of Tennessee football and screw up every play during the game just to hear "It's Football Time In Tennessee" to get things started. It's impossible to imagine going to Neyland Stadium and NOT hearing his voice.  :bawl:

Since you mentioned it, I got to thinking about it.  Certainly Denton is the most notable PA guy I can think of in CFB.  Across all sports, I would put Bob Sheppard in that class- he added a touch of class to Yankee Stadium for almost 60 years (and God knows Yankee Stadium needed every little bit of class it could get).  Also, Ivor Robson, who has been the first tee announcer at the British Open for over 40 years.  Those are really the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I dont know how the next person to do it is not going to be a huge letdown.  And I can't bring myself to watch that yet.

There's this vintage, old school certain something about TN football that I've always sensed, since I was a child. Ward was a huge part of it.  For me, Majors is because he was the coach when I came to the age of awareness.  At halftime I can close my eyes and listen to the Alma Mater and I feel it all around.  A chill will.go up my spine, but at the same time it's warm and safe.  It seems like since 98 a little bit of it keeps slipping away.  Ward left and at the time I knew things were changed forever.  I still tear up when I hear that Chesney song.  And now Denton.  It just makes me so sad.

Dangit, I'm ready for some more "glory days" to start!

For me, a big part of that was also lost when the jumbotron went up.  And while I can't imagine a game without it at this point, I wish it didn't have to come at the expense of the VOLS sign.  If you think about it, that was our Touchdown Jesus.  It was something unique to Tennessee, and Neyland lost a big chunk of its "old school" feel when it was taken down. :frown:

Big part of the gameday experience at Neyland and will definitely be missed.   :bawl:
