I don't think the Broncos will win the Super Bowl because I think their defense is suspect and I think Manning is old enough that the season has taken a toll on him and that will show up against a good defense in the postseason.

But even without a second ring, how can he not be a strong consideration as the best QB to ever play the game? 13 Pro Bowl selections = most ever for a QB. 4 MVP selections (about to be 5) = most ever. He's shattered the old single-season TD record at the age of 37 (54 & counting). And he's 70 yards away today from the single-season yardage record at the age of 37. He is second all-time in terms of wins. Etc. Etc.

Brady? Not hardly. Favre? No.

I did not want to jump the gun, so I have waited all these years, but I think I can finally say:  He's no Peyton Manning.

There's only 3 QBs I would put in Peyton's class: Montana, Elway and Brady. IMO The only thing that keeps him from being head and shoulders above everybody is the fact he only has one title and his poor record (compared with the others) in the playoffs.

With the exception of WR, there is really no consensus on the "greatest ever" at ANY position.  They all have 5-6 guys in the argument.  If you're one of those guys, you've had an amazing career.  Clearly, Manning is one of those guys.

Personally, I'd still pick Montana.  If Peyton gets another ring, he may surpass him.

Montana is the one guy I might consider putting ahead of Manning. I grew up a big Marino fan, and I think he's one of the top five to ever play the game, but he didn't have that extra push that Manning and Montana have/had.

To be completely honest, Brady wouldn't be in my top five. He has spent his entire career surrounded by some pretty remarkable talent. I'd rank him behind Manning, Montana, Marino, Elway and Favre...at least.

BDV - while I don't care for the guy, I think Lawrence Taylor would be pretty near a consensus pick as best all time at OLB, and I suspect that Tony Gonzales is likely a near unanimous pick as best all-time TE.

Many here never saw him but Jim Brown had no peers as running back. Yes I mean Sayers, Sweetness, Simpson, Sims, or anyone else. He had one foe (Sam Huff) that caused him some agitation simply becaused the Giants used him to mirror Brown whereever he went, ball or not.

The one thing that Peyton doesn't fare well against is cold weather..We saw that earlier in the year during the 2nd half at New England and last year at home in the playoffs against the Ravens..I noticed Peyton wears gloves on both hands unlike Tom Brady who doesn't wear one on his throwing hand and keeps his right hand in his jersey with a pocket warmer so that he can feel and grip the ball better..I don't see how you can throw a ball nearly as good with gloves on but thats just my opinion..I would like to see Peyton win another Super Bowl but home field advantage in Denver like last year may back fire on them if the weather bottoms out..It will probably come down to the Pats at Denver..I just hope it's not 10 below zero when they play..Brady seems to thrive in weather like that while Peyton seems to wilt..Will be pulling for Peyton though..Go Bronco's!!

While LT would certainly be my pick (especially if you break it down to OLB and ILB), I don't think it's anywhere near unanimous- guys like Butkus, Lewis, Lambert, and Singletary, off the top of my head, would also get plenty of votes.  As for TE, you're probably right.  Gonzo has really pulled away from the field in recent years.

I agree if you just say LB, but all those guys you named are MLB, at OLB, there is really no question that LT was/is the best.

A lot of talking heads have been saying Peyton is the all time greatest.  So when they get aboard, (a) it's surprising and (b) who am I to disagree (since I agree with them anyway  :naughty:).

As for the others, I'd put Montana first.  As for Brady, he is a great QB, but IMO his three rings are tainted by cheating.  Something rarely, if ever discussed....but all three wins were pretty close (three points apiece!) and you have to think that knowing the signals gave them a great advantage.

I get sick of hearing guys like Colin Cowherd state how great Brady is without ever mentioning that factor.   :rolleyes:

I know I'm a homer, but I think the numbers back me up in saying that Manning is the all-time greatest.  Sure, he doesn't have the championships, but teams win championships.  QB's can't shoulder the entire load of whether or not a team wins them.  Would Manning have been a detriment to any team that has one the Super Bowl?

"Greatest all time" should take into account the full body of work.  Marino's got all the stats but never won a SB, so that's his "yeah but..".  Terry Bradshaw has 4 SB rings but no one on the planet would say he's the greatest.  SB's are obviously important but not the only indicator.  Peyton has a ring and all the stats, so what am I missing here?  I'm pulling for the Broncos obviously, but what will one more ring prove anyway?

More food for thought, Joe Montana played on arguably the most talented teams in NFL history (pre salary cap days).  So, he had a ton of talent around him.

I also hear talking heads say "these numbers are just a product of the times and the current rules that are geared towards offenses".  If this is the new norm, then please explain the fact that 21 NFL teams had 55 or fewer passing TD's over the past two seasons COMBINED.

A stat that is pretty telling of the times is that 21 QB's had 3000 or more yards passing this season. That is crazy.

I'm tired of people that say without more SB rings, Peyton can't be the best ever...that is total BS.  It takes a complete team to win a SB ring and no QB should have to carry that alone...it is won or lost as a team.   The Broncos may not win it this year because of their Defense...but you can bet Peyton will be blamed!   Yep, I'm prejudice, but Peyton is the best NFL QB ever in my book!

If the greatness of a NFL QB was measured solely on the number of Super Bowls he won, Dan Marino would never be mentioned.
