Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Let's talk criticism of the coaches

Not so much here, but I've been astounded at the posts on other boards. People want to line up the whole team and staff and shoot them. I can't say I'm not upset because I'm beside myself over here. But there's just not a damn thing any of us can do but wait until there are new players in those uniforms and hope for the best.
This is a pretty accurate post, but I have to think no one really wants to shoot anyone on the team or the coaches, or anyone at all for that matter. I made a tongue in cheek comment about taking the team out back and shoot them. Obviously, I really don't want to shoot anyone, but I do want this crop of players, mostly, gone and some new and better players to be brought it.

Sunday would not be a good day to get me riled. Hope things turn around for you; really do. G First of all, no you don't. Second, how would that God of yours feel about vague threats to another person over the internet? I'm gonna guess not too good.

I stand by my comments that it's ridiculous to conclude that anyone on this staff is not going to make it at this level after watching the team this first year. And I don't recall anyone ever saying that the coaches couldn't be critiqued. That's a straw man.
It's not deniable that many here would not tolerate criticism a few weeks ago. Now it's popular and it's okay. Nothing straw man about it. No one is going to admit they were wrong because that's not how things are done on the internet.

Blah blah blah.....one year into a massive rebuilding job and "Expert" football analysts know more about coaching than this staff. I am at least consistent...this staff cannot be held responsible for the mess dooley left and it will take more than a season to fix it. CBJ has a proven record of being a winner...he doesnt suddenly forget how to coachcoach or suddenly just start sucking. Jmo
Mean things to say to me; there's the first one. Who's next? Don't be shy. Plenty of old posts on here to out you. No reason to hide now.

Seems pretty much everyone here wanted to lash out at a certain someone that had some criticisms of the offensive coaching staff a few weeks ago. This poster really got it good for having the audacity to say something about them. Now, after tonight, seems everyone wants to criticize the coaches for poor performance this season. So, I guess the thing to do for those of you that this applies to is to give a mighty large apology for lashing out against another for the same things many of you are now saying. I would wager a guess that such a thing won't happen and much rationalization will occur in order to avoid admitting you were wrong for berating someone that saw some concerns long before you. Now, say some mean things to me and pretend that you are better than I am because it makes you feel better. A last point, I'm not talking about me. I really don't care anything about coaching so long as it leads to winning.

Really? Really?!? How about showing a little class and maturity, and remember that these are 18-22 year olds. Considering the context, this may be the most ridiculous post I've read here. For your sake, I hope you're drunk.
I don't drink, and I don't think getting drunk is anything close to a mature activity. If you don't like my hyperbole I'm not going to try force you to, but I'm not going to stop it because you think I literally want the players to get a bullet in the head. Last point, I don't care how old these grown men "kids" are, age is not an excuse to lack effort. 3rd graders have to give effort.

The only thing these players on this team do reliably is suck at football. They need to be taken out back and shot. The lack of talent is one thing, but no effort from these massive ass offensive linemen to get a push against smaller defensive linemen is the most bullshizzle thing I've ever seen. fizzle that.

Do I have concerns? You bet. Does that mean these guys won't work long term? Nope. I was no fan of Chavis in '95.
I'm still on my three year wait and see plan, as I am with all coaches. A win doesn't mean we have geniuses, and a loss doesn't mean they're buffoons. With most people the truth is somewhere in the middle, and coaches are no different.
Am I puzzled we haven't done some things I perceive to offset our dearth of talent? Yes. I think milking the play clock, going to more of a power running game, and getting the young QBs PT early in the season would have been advantageous. I also questioned the wisdom of letting Chenay and Pittman walk. However, the proof will be in the pudding.
Hopefully the positives will outweigh the negatives. There will always be both.
It does not take three years to determine if a coaching staff has it in them to be successful. Didn't take long to see Sunseri was worthless last year. Ellis Johnson and his staff didn't need long to prove their ineptitude. Everyone will know what this staff has long before three years has elapsed.

There are too many people that want to give the coaches a pass and put it all on the players because they are not SEC caliber. While that is true, nothing ever has one cause. Multiple factors are in play for everything. Knowing that, it's not unfair to question some things the coaches have done, particularly on offense where there have been more struggles. Some of that is on the players, and some of it is on the coaches. Maybe the offensive system and coaches get the job done with better players, but they won't if they don't correct the errors that have been made all year. I don't there is anything unfair about that stance.

I am not looking at silver linings I am looking at what the game means for our future.
I'll believe in a bright future when it becomes a bright present. I just have no hope that Tennessee won't find a way to lose every game they play against a quality opponent. I've seen too much of it to think it will end. God help me but I'm just miserable with the state of things.

Oh please. That's a cop out. Many (most) people thought Peterman might start the first game before Worley was named the starter. You are using hindsight to justify your position. Not buying it. That said, I would like to see one of the freshman play, although not necessarily today, simply because a backup QB with playing experience is needed.
Can't be anymore straight forward than this; that is absolute bovine excrement. All of the talk has been about the freshmen, all of it. You deny that and you are flat out wrong, and that's the end of it.

Lots of folks said that about Peterman too. I wouldn't be so sure.
Again, no one really thought Peterman was any good. Everyone really wants to see these freshmen that keep garnering praise out of practice reports. Nothing from spring/summer/fall suggested that Peterman could do anything. You know that as well as I do. Peterman was played just to try something because Worley has been proven to be ineffective. Playing Peterman was not a good idea, and it just seems like he only played because Jones is devout about not playing the freshmen this year.

The only thing I will say about that is I hope they play better than Peterman. That was a disaster.
No one thought Peterman was worth a damn. Jones played him because he already knows Worley will not get it done. That, and it seems he's decided that these freshmen will not be playing if there is anyway he can help it. From my perspective, he seems to be pretty stubbornly sticking to that decision regardless of what he sees on the field on game day. The idea of not playing freshmen for fear that they won't manage the game well and turn it over is kinda irrelevant at this point. The upperclassman can't manage the game and is a turnover machine. You know what you have with Worley on game day. You don't know what the freshmen can do. Play them for fizzle's sake. It can't be any worse. Also, use some of that recruiting prowess and go get a QB. Clearly Tennessee needs one.
