Title: Anybody watching soccer, a question....
Post by: midtnvol on July 28, 2012, 07:56:35 EDT
I was watching the USA Womens' team play Columbia. USA was up 3-0 a couple of minutes into the 2nd period then they added 3 minutes to the clock then stopped the game. What gives?

Injury time. The clock doesn't stop in soccer so they keep up with the time that is wasted for injuries and add it back at the end.

OK. Why did they stop the game with most of the second period left. Did Columbia do the equivelent of throwing in the towel?

I didn't watch it so I don't know.

I think I figured it out. I thought it was the second period and it was actually the time just put back on the clock. That"s what I get for trying to watch something I don't know anything about.

The clock runs UP in soccer.   So if it says 88, that means there is actually 2 minutes left in the game, not 88 to go.

Did that help?

The game ended with 3 something on the clock and running up as you said but the period said "2". I think the second period was actually over except for the injury time like revolver mentioned. I watched the same thing happen in the GBR- Cameroon game and I guess I wasn't paying too close attention since soccer bores the living hell out of me. Now I'm watching USA Womens volleyball vs Korea. This is more interesting.

The US/Korea volleyball game was pretty entertaining to start, at least. I had to leave at 6-6 bug DVR'd the rest to watch tonight. Soccer, OTOH, may be the most useless sport known to man. Well, next to golf.
