9901  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Three game 7's today, two more tomorrow... on: May 03, 2014, 05:55:44 EDT
If I cared about the NBA, I might be pretty excited.

Still, five game 7's in one weekend?  That's pretty crazy.  Has that ever happened before?

No, this is the most game 7s in the first round ever.
9902  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: PAC 12 coaches crying about SEC 8 game schedule. on: May 03, 2014, 05:22:38 EDT
The Big 12 also whined about this earlier in the week.

Although this does bring up an interesting answer to the ""home and home" problem, which is that if other leagues are trading 4 home games for 5, then the SEC can also.  Yes, some years that will suck, but that's life in the big city.

As college football has grown bigger and into a huge cash cow, some things have to change.   Playing an unequal number of home and away games in a conference schedule is not, in the grand scheme of things, that big a deal compared to other things.

To be fair, Franklin himself had nothing to do with it.  But that lion inside him has a mind of its own.

I'm sure that JJ running for reelection had nothing to do with that rapid termination ...

Has everything to do with it, but kind of hard to deny it was not deserved, to say the least.

Maybe because it's an election year, justice is done for once?
9906  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: SEC decides to keep 8 games, mandates "power game" on: April 28, 2014, 04:26:14 EDT
I agree with the LSU AD. Same with us.....there is a 80% chance as it is now that we would have to play Bama twice to win the SEC.....We are the only team in the SEC that would have to do that year end and year out...Think about that!!

As it is now we have a disadvantage.

I agree also, but I think we are on the path to being much more competitive with bammer.

Its still 2-3 years away though.  This year will be a struggle again.  Next year will be better and by 2016 we might...just maybe...be all the way back (to being competitive at the highest level of the SEC...not predicting an NC or anything).
9907  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: SEC decides to keep 8 games, mandates "power game" on: April 28, 2014, 02:30:18 EDT
This will be revisited within 5 years.  SECN is going to demand a 9 game conference schedule.  All they did today was delay the inevitable.

I'm in favor of a nine game schedule.

They could also consider division realignment.  But to keep the two current big out of division rivalries of Uga-AU and UT-bammer alive, all four of those teams would have to be in the same division.

No way!

And of course UF-UGa would have to stay also, so just imagine five of the six traditional powers in the same division.  Would never work.

9908  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: SEC decides to keep 8 games, mandates "power game" on: April 28, 2014, 02:27:29 EDT
Interesting comment by LSU AD

"Since 2000 LSU has played Florida and Georgia 19 times and Alabama has played them eight times. That is a competitive disadvantage. There are a lot of other examples."

What's sad is that bammer playing us, should even that up a bit.  Heck, from 2000-2006 it did, in fact.

One day soon..... ?
9909  Sports / VTTW Message Board / SEC decides to keep 8 games, mandates "power game" on: April 28, 2014, 02:25:42 EDT
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/10849658/sec-keep-traditional-non-divisional-rivalries-tweaks-future-scheduling

All teams must now schedule at least one foe from a so-called "power conference", which I assume is one of the old BCS conferences (I don't know if whatever replaced the Big Least counts or not).

Which means....Starting in 2016, each school will have to play at least one opponent from either the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten or Pac-12

We are already meeting that rule for the forseeable future.

9910  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: My interest in upcoming NFL draft on: April 28, 2014, 01:16:01 EDT

McCaron, OTOH, seemed to have all the intangibles, up until this past season.  Now, he's starting to look like a guy who brings the circus to town.  Not just with his mother, but with his fame-whore girlfriend, and their new reality show.  How many teams are going to want to put up with that kind of crap over a late round draft pick?  It's probably the same reason that Tim Tebow is no longer playing.  Teams might put up with a little more off-field stuff if they thought they were getting the next Joe Montana, but that's clearly not the case.

I didn't realize that the reality show had actually occured.  Since it apparently has, your point is well taken.  There is a very good chance he won't be drafted.

And yeah, his girlfriend is incredibly hot, but man did she make the most of her "15 minutes".  She should be paying Brent Mushberger royalties.
9911  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Respect the KPD's authoritah, or they will choke a b**ch on: April 28, 2014, 01:13:51 EDT
Wow...although it's the sheriff's, what I do know is that at my HS in the 80s there was a certain starting QB __ ____, who, according to the team manager who sat next to me in one class, was always on speed during each and every game.  Further, according to my other friend who played on the team, he got one of the cheerleaders pregnant and insisted she get an abortion.  I remember her crying at at school all the time to this day.

This waste of space had no scholarship prospects...during his two years starting we were 1-19.  He had no ambition of attending college either.

So what did he do?  Join the KPD, of course!  Within two years of graduating HS, which he barely managed.  He was the very stereotype of a dumb HS jock with no prospects after HS.

No disrespect to the honorable members of the KPD, which I am sure exist, but the fact that they accepted him always made me wonder.

9912  Sports / VTTW Message Board / My interest in upcoming NFL draft on: April 27, 2014, 11:17:30 EDT
As usual, I will be watching to see where Tennessee players go.   Highest projected is Juwan in the middle of 2nd round.  McCullers is a bit surprisingly ahead of Richardson, but both are early 4th round.

Also of interest to me...AJ McCarron is projected late 4th round, exactly where Bray was a year ago.  So to me, that means there is a chance he is not drafted.

In which case, I am very interested if his mama will tweet NFL scouts that they just don't know how good her boy is, and what were they thinking.     The amusement value of that scenario is through the roof, IMO.

On  a realistic note, although I think Bray had better physical skills, McCarron clearly has more experience and is better polished.  I would think an NFL team is more likely to take a late round flyer on him, but we will see.
9913  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: It's a big day for video game historians... on: April 26, 2014, 09:10:15 EDT
I didn't think the "crash" happened that soon.  It seems it was more like the 85 or 86 timeframe.  But I suppose it could have started in 1983.  I got my Atari 2600 (or whatever number it was) in early 83...it was hardly crashing at that time.  Me and my friends played video games all the way through my senior year of 84-85.

But whatever, interesting that they did bury them.
9914  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Did you see the Broncos schedule for this year? I hope they make the playoffs. on: April 26, 2014, 12:29:48 EDT
Broncos didn't play Seattle or SF in regular season last year.

Yeah, it was a preseason game, as it turns out.

Whatever.   I don't recall anyone saying their schedule was easy last year.  Playing Indy and New England out of the division on the road ain't easy.
9915  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Did you see the Broncos schedule for this year? I hope they make the playoffs. on: April 24, 2014, 05:50:17 EDT
Looking at this year's schedule, they again play New England, Indy and Seattle, while also picking up San Fran.

IMO, the San Fran game is the only thing you can point to that's "harder".   Peyton can handle it, he's a big boy.  Heck, it will be a good game and I am looking forward to it.

If I hated Peyton and wanted to dis his success last year, I would definitely talk about the Broncos (mythical) "easy schedule" last year.    Go post that on Mudlizard, they will love it.
9916  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Did you see the Broncos schedule for this year? I hope they make the playoffs. on: April 24, 2014, 05:47:37 EDT
Good.  It will better prepare them for the offseason.

How could last year's schedule be "easy", when they played in the toughest division in the NFL?  KC and San Diego both made the playoffs...KC was leading the NFL in record for a long time.  Granted, KC DID have an easy schedule.  Oh yeah, the Broncos also played Indy...another playoff team...on the road and played New England on the road as well.

Heck, they even played Seattle in the regular season!

Easy?   Seriously dude, where do you get this stuff?
9917  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: In four weeks the future of the Bama-Tennessee game will be determined... on: April 24, 2014, 05:41:22 EDT
I am for 9 games as well. The main reason is that with an 8 game conference schedule with a 6-1-1 format and 14 teams means you play the same 7 teams every single year. You also only play the other 6 teams in conference TWICE every TWELVE YEARS. So it takes 12 years to see UT-LSU, UT-AU, Georgia-Alabama, Florida-Alabama to play at each others home stadium? Not for me. Expanding the conference and not the conference games is watering down the product in my opinion.

This is pretty much what I think.  The flip side is that playing 9 SEC games is brutal.

I wonder how other conferences do it...there may eventaully be an NCAA standard for that, as there is requiring 12 teams for a championship game.
9918  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Alden Hill to transfer on: April 24, 2014, 03:28:45 EDT
My first thought was that he looked good in relief, but looking back at his stats he wasn't even the third back last year and had only 10 carries.  You can't really read that much into 10 carries.

I think with Hurd and others coming in he just saw the hand writing on the wall and wants to play.  I don't blame him, I think it's a good move.

Good luck Alden!
9919  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Just wondering, did they pass the legislation allowing grocery stores to sell on: April 24, 2014, 03:21:50 EDT
There are no alcohol sales in grocery or convenient stores here in Maryland simply because the liquor store lobby OWNS the state legislature.  It is amazingly pathetic.  Just about every strip mall here in MD has a liquor store and nail salon.  It's almost like those come "standard".

So the idea is to get liquored up and go to the nail salon?  How strange.  Probably makes getting waxed easier though.
9920  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: In four weeks the future of the Bama-Tennessee game will be determined... on: April 24, 2014, 03:18:22 EDT

One other note, some people, especially younger fans will say that UT/UGA and UT/UF are two of those traditional rivalries. Not so. Before the divisions, UT didn't play those two very much at all. Hard to believe.

Nah, those rivalries were more or less created by the divisions split.

I do remember some classic AU-UT games in the late 80s and early 90s though.  It was a heck of a rivalry.

A couple Michiganders leading 2 of UT's flagship programs. Who woulda thunk it? I will now commence rationalizing it as a great hire!

we let the SOBs have Lloyd Carr for a while (won the last U Mich NC), so they owe us anyway.
