Title: Went to my local Wal Mart neighborhood market to get groceries this morning
Post by: Black Diamond Vol on July 01, 2016, 05:17:20 EDT
I had forgotten that today is the first day they can sell wine in groceries in TN.  So I saw this stuff sitting on the end cap for $2.84 a bottle, and I couldn't resist making an impulse buy.  I mean, it says right on the bottle that it has "won over 90 medals".  So it HAS to be quality stuff, right?

Wife and me stopped at the Kroger super store here this afternoon.....people were flocking to the wine isles. They have a great selection and I'd say more to pick from than any liquor store in town. On average the cost of the wines that we buy were a $1.00 to $1.50 cheaper than the liquor stores. But it's all about convenience. No more making 2 stops.

Drinking the cheap stuff right now.  To my untrained pallette,  it's not bad.  I mean it's no Thunderbird or Boones Farm, but still decent.

Duh.  Any Boones connoisseur knows it's Strawberry Hill or nothing at all.

Oak Leaf is Walmart's private label. It's produced by Franzia which also produces Three Wishes for Whole Foods and Charles Shaw for Trader Joe's.(Two Buck Chuck, although it's not two bucks anymore.)

You probably did not find a vintage date on the bottle since the wines are frequently made from grapes of different years.

I've never had it so I can't review it. But I believe that if you like it, drink it.

Well hell.  Now that I know this is Walmart brand wine, it suddenly doesn't taste quite as good.   :toothless:

Oak Leaf was a "less expensive" wine here at our store..$4.99. It's a good drinking wine for a little money, good to cook with. The taste gets better if you let is air about 20 or 30 minutes before consuming it.

Can you get liquor in grocery stores there yet? If not, do you think it will be allowed eventually?

No liquor yet.  As I told the local paper, wine is just a foothold 3-5 years from now, I would dare
say that they will be trying to get the Liquor into  all grocery stores.  The wine hasn't really effected
us to say.  We have Kroger, Wal Mart and another local store to compete with and are fortunate to have
a faithful customer base who hates the big chain stores! If liquor gets introduced and passed into law, I will be homeless..lol

I understand where you are coming from. But it is convenient to do your shopping in one place. I get my scotch at Sam's club. It is $12 dollars a bottle less there than at the liquor store. How can one justify paying that much more? The only time I buy at the liquor store is when they have a big sale on the brand I like.

That's just the great part of living in a smaller town.  Closest Sams, Costco in about a hour away!  Would you drive that far for the savings on your Scotch?  If you were there shopping then yes...but if not...???
