The section of I-5 going through "Cow Death Camp"...I just about puked from the smell.  I don't know how anyone lives within 50 miles of that place.

I lived in the Bay area (Santa Clara) in the 80's and loved it.  Weather is almost perfect.

If I could retire anywhere, it would be on Cal side of Lake Tahoe.  But yeah, you can keep the rest of the state.

Mammoth Lakes would be nice too.  But I think the isolation would get to me after awhile.  I mean, it's like 3 hours from the nearest Wal Mart.

What would you do when the snow melted?
Tahoe would be a better choice, but I would live on the side with no income tax ...

Biking, hiking, ATV'ing...contrary to popular belief, most ski areas don't close when there's no snow.  They remain open for just about any summer outdoor activity you can do in the mountains.

And this is a "if money were no object" scenario anyway, so I'm not even taking taxes into account.  I'd prefer to live up near Squaw Valley and away from all the casino traffic.
