Title: Re: Game Thread: Vandy 2022 Post by: PirateVOL on November 27, 2022, 03:22:27 EST 1st half notes
Offense: OL not blocking the run game well at all. Part of the issue in the throw game is the lack of an effective run game We finished the 1st half with two B/U OGs in the game Milton is a bit off, needs to settle down I expect he will be given some safer throws early in the 2nd half to get his confidence up I do hope they give him an opportunity run as I think that will open up the offense Defense: The DL has been playing better, seem much more aggressive tonight Banks makes a difference in the play of the defense, he has been very active tonight In a shocker we have played much better zone tonight! Beasley really played one zone well for example The secondary has played much better, at least in the same zip code most of the 1st half Banks missed a tackle or two and a couple of other missed tackles or bad angles but much fewer than last week Special teams: Punting a bit poor on length but OTOH coverage has been good, though I think the wind is part of that PR has been good KO not up to standards Title: Re: Game Thread: Vandy 2022 Post by: PirateVOL on November 27, 2022, 03:30:35 EST Well, maybe run blocking improved?
Title: Re: Game Thread: Vandy 2022 Post by: PirateVOL on November 27, 2022, 03:31:31 EST 76 back in, but 75 and 53 out
Title: Re: Game Thread: Vandy 2022 Post by: murfvol on November 27, 2022, 03:33:31 EST Nice first half synopsis. Nice move by Small to get a lot more than I thought was there.
Also, I thought Vandy would use a hard count instead of actually snapping and running into the teeth of the defense. Title: Re: Game Thread: Vandy 2022 Post by: JeffCountyVolFan on November 27, 2022, 03:34:19 EST I would not be surprised if the staff doesn't want Milton running due to our current QB depth.

I thought that the QB should have definitely kept that ball on the 4th down play. The end defender crashed down and he had a blocker on the edge. I agree, but on this play the RDE did not crash till he released the ball, he hesitated, which may have influenced QB to give the ball to the RBAt the line the defensive alignment screamed read option to the left Title: Re: Game Thread: Vandy 2022 Post by: Creek Walker on November 27, 2022, 03:41:47 EST Thrilled that we are dominating the game but, sadly, Joe Milton is still Joe Milton. Such a physical specimen but can’t connect on the deep ball to save his life. I don’t know how you fix that at this point. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt in this one, given the circumstances and the weather. But let’s see how he looks in the bowl after a month’s worth of practice with the 1’s. Title: Re: Game Thread: Vandy 2022 Post by: Creek Walker on November 27, 2022, 03:56:15 EST Watching how dominant this team looks today on both sides of the ball almost makes me more depressed than if we were struggling, in a weird sort of way. Even without Hooker we are one of the best teams in America. What might have been. :bawl:
Title: Re: Game Thread: Vandy 2022 Post by: Creek Walker on November 27, 2022, 03:58:58 EST Also, watching this game should make it clear that Tennessee is the best 2-loss team in the country. It almost certainly won’t matter but there’s no way in hell Alabama (or any other 2-loss team) should be ranked ahead of us.

He obviously still has a long way to go and still misses a lot. But he is definitely better than last season. Last season he was just awful at times, now I think he just underperforms. I guess we will find out eventually how good he can be. Not holding my breath that he will ever approach Hooker, but hopefully we can at least have a decent season next year while breaking in Jackson or Iaemaleva (sp) Title: Re: Game Thread: Vandy 2022 Post by: Black Diamond Vol on November 29, 2022, 08:08:58 EST I'm going to push back on Milton a bit. Per all reports, he has the utmost confidence of his coaches and teammates. That leads me to believe that he’s making these throws in practice. Is it all in his head? Does he get stage fright in front of big crowds? Maybe he needs to see a sports psychologist. :dunno: Title: Re: Game Thread: Vandy 2022 Post by: Creek Walker on November 29, 2022, 08:15:44 EST He won the job out of camp last year, and no one questioned it. While it was obviously in very limited situations, he was making those throws in mop-up duty this season. Then as soon as he went into a game where it mattered (although South Carolina had us beat by that point, in all reality), he started over-throwing his targets. Maybe Heup needs to find a way to hypnotize him before the start of the game and make him think he's trotting out with a 50-0 lead. |
