I had to install some software that required babysitting for ~20 minutes, so I went ahead and looked up these stats here: http://web1.ncaa.org/stats/StatsSrv/rankings?doWhat=archive&sportCode=MFBThis is a list of the worst scoring D's in the SEC for the period 1999-2012, which is all the NCAA has archived. 2012 UT 37.00 2011 OM 32.08 2010 OM 35.17 2009 AU 27.62 2008 Ark 31.17 (Tamu...33.54) 2007 UK 29.6 2006 UK 28.4 2005 UK 34.1 2004 UK 31.0 2003 MSU 39.32002 Van 30.7 2001 Van 36.5 2000 UK 34.8 1999 UK 29.4 So...MSU was the worst in the last 13 years, and to catch them we would have to allow about 48 ppg to UK and Vandy...not likely, but I am not even going to predict we won't, lol! Not that it matters but....the "winner" on this list is UK followed by Vandy followed by Ole Miss. Not very surprising that those teams are down there, and no way should UT be on any list with their records of "incomperitude". I feel slightly better that Arkansas and AU made the list, but not really. Just FYI...BDV asked about this below.

Oh yeah, I added Tamu on there even though they weren't in the conference yet...just to show that, hopefully, things can turn around.

Interesting. Are those numbers for all games, or league games only? I'd be willing to bet that we're the worst in league games.

All games. The league games aren't tracked. I thought of what you say, but odds are that the OOC games are much better across the board, ourselves included. Or that they cancel out.

Mississippi State gave up 41.3 ppg in SEC games in 2003. Tennessee is currently giving up 43.7 ppg in SEC games this season.

For league games, if our current average holds it is the worst SEC defense since 1979 Vanderbilt, which gave up 45.3 in SEC play. This UT defense is currently giving up 43.7. Next on the list would be 1995 South Carolina at 40.0, which is the only other one of two other SEC defenses to give up an average of 40+ PPG in conference play since that Vandy team. So if UT gives up 58+ points in its last two games (likely, IMO) it will tie or beat that South Carolina team and will have given up an average of 40+ points, becoming only the third fourth SEC team in the last 33 years to be that bad. To sink below that 1979 Vandy team UT would have to give up 101 points in its last two games, so that's probably unlikely. Still this paints a pretty ugly picture of how pathetic this defense is. All data is from Ken Massey, btw. Edit: Creek Walker is right . . . 2003 MSU also gave up 40+, so we'd be the 4th team. Good catch, Creek.

Well, we won the MNC one year after posting the worse Scoring Defense in 2009. So, there is some hope (but only if you pay for a phenom QB, amiright Vinnie?).

We don't have money for that right now, we have to give Jon Gruden a bazillion dollars and my one good kidney.

Thanks for posting that. Could you post a link? I'd like to bookmark it. I googled Ken Massey but got a whole lot of other stuff.

Interesting stuff, but given that our next worst year was 27 ppg (in all games, not just SEC)..... What a proud tradition Tennessee has, and how it's getting mangled now. But we can hope this is temporary, like 62-64, or the early Johnny years.

Thought it would be fun horrific to update this after Saturday's game. UT only has to give up 17 points to Kentucky this week to average 40+ PPG allowed in SEC play. If the defense allows 27 points or more, they will eclipse the 2003 MSU defense and officially be the worst SEC scoring defense since 1979. Also, for Bandit: http://masseyratings.com/team.php?t=7801&s=181623. Within any team's season you can click on their conference twice to get to a league summary screen (like this one), which is how I quickly scanned through points allowed in conference year-by-year.
