Title: Hubbs just said Gruden appears to be out
Post by: Volznut on November 28, 2012, 09:30:06 EST

"at this point the search for Tennessee's next head coach is centered around other names like Jimbo Fisher, Al Golden, Larry Fedora perhaps and Charlie Strong."

As I predicted the other day, it's going to be Fedora.

Patterson, Gundy or Jimbo Fisher I can live with, and I think Strong would be o.k.

Presumably an NFL team was smoked out and sent Gruden something to think about. More power to him. I appreciate him giving UT a look.

He's not very good and we didn't want him anyway.

No doubt...he wouldn't have translated to the college game anyway.   :violin: :violin: :violin:

Those other coaches will enter with more than just an uphill battle in getting TN back to competitive on the football field.  Good luck to them.

I still think it's odd that as tight lipped as the AD has been, suddenly THIS is leaked?

I still want to believe it's smoke, but I'm fading fast.

Miami radio is reporting that UT is interviewing Golden tomorrow.

I swear, if we went through all this just to wind up with Al freakin' Golden . . .

If Hart doesnt want Gruden...it is in his best interest for it to leak out there that Gruden cancelled a meeting...making it look like JG just had no interest... Not his fault....   He may not have counted on JG saying he wanst being pursued.....

Al Golden is not on Murfvol's list at all. I'd hire Hugh Freeze before him.

Yeah. Me too.

I understand what he inherited at Temple and Miami, but dude has a 40-45 career record. Derek Dooley . . . Gene Chizik . . . history lessons anyone?

I think Golden would have been a fine get for, oh, UK. Seriously, are you going to tell me we couldn't have gotten Patterson, Gundy or Fisher? We absolutely could get one, and possibly any of three.

Other than Jon Gruden, Jeff Fisher, Chris Peterson, Bill Cowher or any other iconic coach of this caliber, I hope your AD doesn't say the following upon announcing the hiring of UT's next head coach: "He was our first choice" or "We got our man."

There's no shame in admiting you swung for the fences, and ended up settling for a very good football coach who in all reality could end up being an even better fit at Tennessee (given its circumstances) than the iconic coach.  As someone mentioned earlier, winning the press conference is only a bonus, but not the primary goal.

My take on your currently rumored B-list candidates:
Golden - meh.  What has he done?
Strong - solid.  May not be charismatic, but has all the other qualities you seek.
Patterson - solid, with potential to be more.  This is the one B-list guy that I (as an UGA fan) hope you guys don't hire.
Fedora - meh. What has he done?
Jimbo Fisher - Way overrated.  Can recruit but can't develop.
Gundy - Very good, but he's not leaving OSU.  It's his alma mater, is in an easier conference and Pickens will match any offer.

I have thought Gruden unlikely since I learned how much ESPN paid him.  And it turns out, he would have to give up even more income in the form of endorsements, or that at least seems likely.

So I am not terribly disappointed.  He was not at the top of my list anyway, but recently he moved up, simply because I figured all the attention was a positive (no such thing as bad PR, etc).

Having said that, Hubbs is not the final authority and could just be pulling something out of his arse, for all we know.

We will know who the coach is when he is announced, whenever that is.  I will be relieved to not have all the fuss going on.  It's way overblown IMO.    It could drag on another month though....
