It just occured to me that they really weren't willing to die, otherwise they would have detonated the backpacks while wearing them.

these guys may have been working alone.  It seems like they had no freaking plan, for anything after the bombing

Those bombs were too small for a terrorist group(And Terrorists would have used plastic explosives like C-4). If Al-Queda had done it it would have taken out a City block and probably have killed hundreds.
