I would guess that the SEC very much wanted this to happen before the realignment to the 12 team CFP.

The scheduling is going to be interesting to see. Personally, I think I would like to see 3 yearly opponents with everyone playing a home-away with all of the other SEC schools during a four year period.

Apparently that’s going to be the format. But we still don’t know who everyone’s 3 permanent opponents will be. Speculation is that we’ll get bama, UK, and Vandy. I think most of us would be thrilled with that, which is why it probably won’t happen.

That was one reason, another is that the Big 12 new teams are competing in 2024 so I would imagine the bribe to leave was reduced

BTW, I went thru this exercise back in Nov - here is what i thought made the most sense in terms of traditional rivalries wrt the 3 permanent opponents:

Mizz       Ark, OK, Aub
Bama       Aub, TN, OK
Ark        LSU, Mizz, TX
Aub        Bama, Uga, Mizz
UF         UGa, LSU, SC
UGa        UF, Aub, SC
UF         UGa, LSU, SC
UGa        UF, Aub, SC
UK         TN, Vandy, MSU
LSU        Ark, Miss, UF
Miss       MSU, LSU, Vandy
MSU        Miss, TAM, UK
OK         TX, Mizz, Bama
SC         UF, Uga, TAM
TA&M       TX, MSU, SC
TN         Bama, UK, Vandy
TX         OK, Ark, TAM
Vandy      TN, UK, Miss

It might help our case for this now that UK is playing better ball.  And it's a no brainer, Vandy's top rival is clearly us, it really is not a debate.

Texas has just scheduled a series with Michigan for '24 and '27.

They are just asking for trouble.

Yeah, it’s probably not a good idea for any SEC teams (at least those with CFP aspirations) to be scheduling any OOC superpowers right now. As I look over our future schedules, we have UVa, Syracuse, Nebraska, WVU, and Washington coming up. That looks like some smart scheduling. Maybe some of these teams blow up by then like we did this year (I’m sure when they look at us, they’re now getting a lot more than they bargained for when these games were scheduled). But it’s more likely that they’re what they’ve all been for the past 20 years or so- mediocre to good, but not great. The SEC is going to be plenty strong enough, especially with a 9 game schedule. No need to add another SEC caliber opponent on top of that.

I could envision Alabama, UF, or UGA throwing hissy fits, or all 3. But you still have to play all the other teams... 6 other annually.

What's weird is that just last week it emscrolled on ESPN at the bottom of the screen that "OU and Texas to SEC prior to 2025 now very unlikely".

Lol.  Standard disinformation by SEC office prior to the announcement? I think so! 🤣
