Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: On a brighter note, our D line
|

The defensive line play was far from perfect, but I really felt like those guys started to play up to the potential we all thought they had when they signed, especially as the game went on. Yes, it was UMass, but seven sacks is impressive against anybody. The D-line completely took over the game in the fourth quarter. Did anybody think at any point in that final quarter that the UMass offense was a threat to move the ball? I didn't. And I think that's one reason Tennessee's play-calling was so vanilla down the stretch. That sort of strategy is playing with fire, because all it takes is one busted coverage and one big play, but that threat was minimized by the fact that UMass was without its All-American tight end and lost its QB as the game progressed.
A healthy UMass offense MAY have been enough for the Minutemen to spring an upset today. But I really think our D-line was zoned in. There weren't many people in orange who were playing with fire today, but those big guys on the line were.
If the Tight end and QB were healthy I'm very afraid the Vols would have had their 2nd loss of the season.

General Boards / PolitiVOL / Re: NFL collectively "standing up to Trump"

The protests are stupid. Trump's comments are stupid. But the First Amendment protects both. You'd be surprised how many "woke" hipsters on twitter don't realize that. I responded to one fool last night who was railing on about the 1A shouldn't apply to "hate speech". I said I'll let you ban hate speech if you let me define it. Seriously, I weep for our future. The 1st Amendment protects us (citizens) against the government. It doesn't protect one at their work place. The Football stadium on Sundays is a work place and the workers are the over paid prima donnas on the field. So, their freedom of speech against the government is protected when not at work. All bets are off while at work. If you think I'm wrong, just go to your work in the morning and start expressing your opinion that everyone white should join the KKK or everyone black should join the Black Panthers. See how that works out for you when you tell them you are protected under the 1st Amendment.

Is anyone surprised an OL and DL would fight?
That's what the Vols need! They need to get mean and nasty again. They sure as hell are not showing any attitude on the playing field.

Some will be overjoyed at Plan B because they hate Butch that much and think a 6-6 season is worth it to get rid of him. I will never take that defeatist attitude. Hell...the next guy might be worse anyway.

We have already had Dooley here. Couldn't get any worse!

We have it 1st and goal at the 9 in our last possession....Kelly had been running over and through them. Florida was gassed and ready to waive the white flag but what does our Tuba playing non coach do.......We throw it 3 times...burning little clock and giving FL just enough time to beat our ass!!!
Right there you tell your OL.....We are about to win this damn game running behind your fat ugly asses.....Then you tell your RB....find the damn end zone! Butch our so called coach is too stupid and clueless. And that is why Butch has zero business coaching in the SEC at UT. If you are happy with 7-5 and 8-4....you got your man.
DING, DING, DING....We have a winner ladies and gentlemen!

Alright- Butch better win this game. He thinks the "noise in the system" has been bad up to now? Just wait... I may start jumping on that noise bandwagon if the Vols don't win.

JMO.....A lot of it has to do with these X-Box offenses that are being run in todays game. It's not the hard-nosed offense it was back several years ago when it was man on man. Zone blocking....5 wide and the shotgun 1 back crap...throw it 50 times per game. When your defense goes against this offense every day in practice then the defense isn't hard-nosed either. I coached under a head coach many years ago that said....Show me a soft offense and I'll show you a soft defense that goes with it. I think he was speaking the truth for the most part because you don't see the great defenses overall anymore.
These guys wouldn't survive under Coach Kelly huh Phil?

If Indiana ST. rolls some yards on us Saturday....I will start to get worried. Georgia Tech runs a very confusing offense for a defense to defend. I'm thanking God that the Vols won't have to see this again this year. I want to see how the boys do against a traditional D as a earlier posted said. There may be a big can of whip ass opened and we all may forget what happened in game one as the season progress on.
