Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: LSU hires Kevin Steele as DC

Saw a NFL insider tweet that said....with the addition of Steele and Orgeron LSU now has the best defensive recruiting staff in the country.
Bama has been getting some top defensive recruits out of La. lately. This might somewhat stop it.
Maybe. But we tried the "bammer LB coach as a DC" and it was a disaster. I suspect it will be for LSU also. Steele does have a history as a DC, but it was not a good one. He was also HC at Baylor and went 1-31. Good luck with your hire LSU>

I think being thrown into the fire against UF last year just killed any chance he might have had. A QB only has so many chances to prove himself, and he dug a very deep hole that day. Good luck to him, and in the future may Butch learn to not take advice from fans on who our QB should be.

Bobo was not a very good SEC-level offensive coordinator.
Right. They were no. 8 in the country in scoring offense this year with a QB who wasn't that great. The ability of football fans to just completely ignore facts altogether never ceases to astound me.

Ugly game, good ending. Though I am on record as saying criticism of Cuonzo was overdone, there is definitely a refreshing difference in our offense this year, at leas there was in the second half. How nice to have scoring threats...

Big differences between NFL and college for someone who has never done college before. Matt Stinchcomb discussed extensively yesterday and said he thought it was going to be a challenge for Shottenheimer.
Uga fans have been whining about both Richt and Bobo for years. Richt did have a couple brain farts this year, but whatever his issues in the past, Uga fans should have few complaints about their offense the last two years. It was one of the best in the SEC, period, dot.

Is that too many QB's? Well, according to something I read about General Neyland's coaching tenure, we had 10 centers on the roster at one time. So, I guess the answer to my questions is no. Yeah when single wing run 95% of the time is your philosophy, 10 centers might make sense. Plus, no scholarship limitations. These dual threat QBs are actually more like the single wing than the pro set though, but with much more throwing. We could use a few of those centers right now, but they would likely only be big enough to play DB or WR, lol.

I don't like either team and am only commenting on what's going on in the game. I think Suh is a thug, but that shouldn't have any impact on calls in this game. No matter - fumble, game over. I hope Green Bay buries them next week.

I'm sure it was hard for Khalil to stay in shape going 13 months without playing a football game. Hopefully Allison Maurer has put together a plan for him to shed some weight before he gets here and he's able to follow it. He needs to report closer to 330, and cut some body fat but not a lot of weight once he gets in our S&C program. I think he'll be fine.
He still looked physically dominant.
A friend of mine said he has been working out with the Raiders. If so, that had to help. Let's just assume it's 340 lbs of muscle until proven otherwise.

2002 might've lived up to the hype, but that team had the worst run of injuries I can ever remember. They did well just to make a bowl game.
well that, or Clausen fumbling 4-6 times against the gators. Definitely a game where Fulmer's reluctance to bench starters just flat killed us. I don't care who was behind him, put him in and let him hand the ball off, it could not have been any worse.
Upon further review, we probably shouldn't have placed such high expectations on the 2005 bunch. That 2004 team won a LOT of nailbiters and had some pretty good luck. They could have easily lost 7-8 games themselves. Those things tend to even out over time, and it surely happened the next year.
Completely agree...we had a ton of luck in 2004 and it reversed in 2005
I don't remember there being THAT much hype in 2008. Coming in to that season, I for one didn't think that was a championship caliber team- but I certainly expected better than 5-7.
It was a cautious optimisim. Depended on how well Crompton did, but he had started a few games and was a highly rated recruit. He completely screwed the pooch, but it wasn't all him as he proved his senior year. Switching OC's 3 times up to that point (from Sanders to Cut to Clawson) probably had a good deal to do with it, in retrospect

Yesterday I was like "oh yeah, how is recruiting going?". Whereas for the last three years in a row, it was the only thing of interest about the Vols after about November 30. I like not worrying about it till early January much better.

Correction...Coleman is listed as a starter and O'Brien turns out to be a sophomore. So...we lose Williams, Gilliam, and Coleman from the current starting lineup. Clearly the strength of the line was at DE, but I thought Williams did a serviceable job along with O'Brien in spite of seeming to play hurt most of the year. I am glad O'Brien is back. Coleman had his best year but still was inconsistent at times. Gilliam was (and I know this is not saying much, lol) one of the better OL IMO in spite of playing with a torn ACL. If I could pick one I wanted back it would be him. I thank all three for their contributions and we will miss them, but clearly none of them are "deal breakers" in terms of being replaceable. The future is very bright.

Only three people in the pickem? I'm amazed. With all of the "experts" on this board I felt surely that they would want to prove their expertise. Put your money where your mouth is. Or in this case, no money. Just your pride. My wonderful family decided this year to spend the first half of Christmas in Knoxville and the second half in Memphis, so I have literally traveled from one end of the state to another. No time for pick ems or such. Which was good news for the rest of you, obviously.
