Dix, and as we boarded the plane in Atlanta, there was a Sergeant First Class in Class A uniform with a small box, probably 12" x 12" x 12" that got on the plane as well. We knew what the box was, but the others on the plane wasn't 'in the know'.
As soon as we took off, I moved up the SFC's seat and talked to him and the Soldier he was escorting. He told me the all about PFC Cortez, his family and his service. He had died in Iraq due to an IED and all that was recovered fit in the box he was carrying. Just before the final approach, the pilot announced that there was a fallen Soldier on board and asked that everyone remained seated until the SFC and the PFC had reached the terminal. It was a very moving and somber experience. |
