Hyams said yesterday that the Gruden talk had hit a "snag" and he feels there is now less than a 5% chance that Gruden will be UT's next coach. As I said yesterday, Hyams nailed it three years ago when he axed the Cutcliffe rumors while most media people were reporting it as a done deal.

I was told today that the snag was Gruden being floated $6 million/5 years guaranteed offer and it not being enough, and that there is now virtually no chance that he becomes UT's next coach.

I would never go put something like this on VolNation or somewhere and open myself to ridicule, but just for the sake of discussion, I think this forum is pretty tame. I'm not one of those people who goes around claiming to have sources. But this comes from someone who is very well connected, and it is the same person who emailed me and told me Kiffin would be named coach in 2009 the day before the story broke. So I trust what I'm hearing here. Obviously I hope it isn't correct; I've gone all in on the Gruden speculation after being really skeptical early.

To balance that (and at the risk of sounding like the Grudenville posters over in Arkansas   ), I have also heard that there may be an announcement tomorrow or Monday. If there were an announcement tomorrow, and perhaps even if there were an announcement as soon as Monday, it almost certainly wouldn't be about someone who is currently coaching. So who does that leave?

That is shocking, if true.  I was under the impression that if there was a snag, it wouldn't be money.

It certainly conflicts what we've heard in recent days.

I forgot to add who this person said one of the top targets would be after Gruden. Actually, I'm not going to add it. Because then I would get ridiculed. It's a name that hasn't been mentioned thus far, at least not seriously. When I heard it, I nearly discounted what else this person said, but as I said above, they're too well connected and have been too reliable in the past to totally discount it.

The coach not mentioned wouldn't be Dungy, would it? I just don't think we would let money be the spoiler, esp since we've got to be fairly close to an acceptable amount. Come on guys, get together!

I think he's afraid he'll screw up Hart's master plan and that Hart will be mad at him.

I am still waiting for the "shocking evidence" related to the basketball players' arrest two years ago. I find Hyams to be full of innuendo....not to mention bull shizzle

Even though Hyams rebuilt a bit of my faith when he correctly called no-go on Cutcliffe, I distrust him as a general rule. However, when someone who hasn't steered me wrong in the past tells me that, in essence, what Hyams is saying is true, that gets my attention. I hope it's wrong, and I hope that Vinnie's theory about the media being told to tone it down plays out. We'll see.
