The Oregon game was bad, but this is way worse.
Can't blame this issue on this staff but our defense hasn't contained the edge in 2 years now.
Florida has a far superior defense than Oregon, order of magnitude at least. Until their top 2-3 corners were out of the game we really never got any consistency going. Really more or less expected.
Till we get more speed we are pretty much hosed. On defense we only have 3-4 players with SEC level speed playing. We have maybe 2-3 at most on offense with same.
To give you an example, we isolated our corners twice yesterday. Both were behind the receiver on the throw. On one, Sutton had the speed to catch up with the ball in the air and make a play and prevent a completion. You can't teach that kind of speed. On the other Coleman never caught up (great throw and catch BTW). Overall Coleman is the better corner at the moment but Sutton can be a great corner with experience. BTW, most of the times we actually contained the corner yesterday it was Coleman doing it.
Schematically I questioned our defense, particularly during all those TD drives last week and stand by that criticism. Obviously I don't know what was intended but time after time one of the safeties took themselves out of the play. IT had to be schemed. Interestingly, yesterday we started a similar move but this week we swapped safeties, using Randolph instead of McNeil and were much more effective, but then we were not as worried about the passing game. In the 2nd half yesterday there were some things going on with the safeties and corners that were just weird. I might have more to say after I watch the game off the DVR.
Bottom line we need 2-3 great recruiting classes to get us some skill and depth to be competitive in the SEC.
