Title: There is a kernel of some really powerful football analytics in here
Post by: Clockwork Orange on January 24, 2014, 04:00:29 EST
Football is behind basketball and baseball in this area, but if you have time and are so inclined I suggest you read the following article, which attempts to establish a "Five Factors" system that describes winning football. You may not be familiar with the stats involved-- I'm still digging into them myself-- but the correlation with outcome is strong. I suspect this needs further development but I like the start.

The summary:

Quote
If you win the explosiveness battle (using PPP), you win 86 percent of the time.

If you win the efficency battle (using Success Rate), you win 83 percent of the time.

If you win the drive-finishing battle (using points per trip inside the 40), you win 75 percent of the time.

If you win the field position battle (using average starting field position), you win 72 percent of the time.

If you win the turnover battle (using turnover margin), you win 73 percent of the time.

Yeah, hear he is dating a cheerleader.  Maybe they will buy land in Jefferson County one day and he'll come back and be the head coach at UT.
