and it does appear to be a legitimate word, but wow, I hate it.  I wonder if it was just incorporated since so many people use it.

Most winning sounds a lot better.

How about the word "scholly" as scholarship slang in sports? We have a veterinarian here who hates that word so much that I work it into a headline whenever possible.

well, that's just a shortened version. The word "winningest" just appears gramatically wrong!

Word usage is bad, but I think grammar will always bother me more. Especially bad usage that eventually becomes accepted.

You don't even want me to get started on the demise of the Oxford comma.

"Winningest" does indeed sound odd, but since no one asked here are my peeves.

1) "The Peyton Mannings, the Reggie Whites..." Uh, how did those guys become plural?
2) "I'm an alumni." All your personalities attended the same school?
3) "I have two questions. Who do you think will start at quarterback today? and Go Vols!"

Nothing bugs me more than the mindless cliches that are so prevalent in sports . . . even though I'm guilty of it myself.

"ALOHA MEANS GOODBYE!!!" was okay the first 15 or so times a player broke free for a touchdown run in a game played in Hawaii, but then it got kinda stale...

How many Hawaii games do you watch Creek? I'll hang up and listen.

Also, I think "irregardless" deserves a shout-out.

One that always got my sister was "The Phil Fulmer Dressing Room Show". Someone didn't quite think out that one.

It doesn't even have to be a Hawaii game anymore...

"Trickeration" is pretty close to "Winningest" and "I'll hang up and listen" in use.

Somebody, somewhere is teaching kids to use quotes for emphasis. Otherwise why would so many idiots be doing it?

It's unrelated, but there's a movement out there to eliminate the apostrophe. Think about the consequences for a second.

I agree with almost all, but I like "trickeration", so long as it's used only for a truly slick move.  I haven't really heard it that much...but maybe I just watch different games.
