I would hesitate to call him the "greatest" guitarist ever.  Even he admitted that his music was very derivative of others, especially Hendrix.  But from a pure technical standpoint, I think he was the best who ever lived.  And as a live performer, no one even comes close.

Have you heard of Gary Clark Jr.?  He's an up and coming blues/rocker from Austin.  For that reason, he's often compared to SRV.  And while he's not THAT good, he's still probably the best young guitarist going right now.

Hendrix and SRV have been in my top 3, usually #1 and 2.
I "discovered" rock music during the prime years of Hendrix.  His performance at Monterey is my favorite live performance, period.
