Well, as we saw last year, Dobbs came in for the 2nd half at bammer and gave us spark, got everyone excited...and then was mediocre at best for the rest of the year.  I hope that's not the case again, but it's possible.  I agree that if he finishes strong, he's the starter next year.  But if not, it will probably be a three man race.

Don't rule out Dormady just because he's not so highly rated.  I think with the way offenses have evolved in the past few years, dual threat QBs have a chance to do very well in the right offense, even if they weren't 4 or 5 star guys in HS.  Exhibits A and B: Just two of your last three Heisman winners, RG3 and Johnny Football (both 3*'s).  And this year's frontrunner Dak Prescott was a 3*, too.

Having said all that, I think Jauan Jennings may be the guy to beat (if Dobbs can't hold on to the job).  He's listed as an athlete, and most have assumed up until recently that he would play DB in college.  But he's done so well at QB this year, many think that's where he'll land at UT.  I saw one of his games on TV, and he's pretty electrifying.

Sounds like we have or will have some options at QB that fit well into the Jones offense, which is nice.  Wasn't so until recently.

No, Peterman had a leg injury. Dobbs hurt his hand against Mizzou and aggravated it again against KY. It was kept real quite because he was all we had.

It was Ferguson who had a leg injury.  It may be that Dobbs hurt his hand, and Peterman was just not allowed to play.  Worley DID hurt his hand.  I'm still not sure Dobbs was ever injured.  Maybe the other board experts can weigh in.
9328  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: On paper, SC is a good matchup for us on: October 28, 2014, 06:28:36 EDT
Question.......Is SC's scoring D as bad as UT's scoring O?  UT's offense not in the same ballpark as Auburn or UGA or KY or TAMU.  Actually, the SC defense is probably thanking the scheduling gods that UT is coming to town.  Now your defense is by far the strength of your team, and one of the tops in the league IMO.  So the match up against our offense will determine the outcome most likely.  Our O averages over 35 points a game and keeps getting better each week.  Our D is about like your offense.

If your offensive coordinator would run something besides swing passes, you might have a few more W's this year.  If our D could stop junior high, we might have a few more as well.  This week should be interesting.

We hung 32 on uga, and in less than 3 quarters with a change at QB we scored 20.  We have good talent at WR while your DBs are inexperienced.  I think our offense will do well...I expect our best offensive performance against an SEC opponent in fact.
9329  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Down three scores on: October 28, 2014, 06:26:04 EDT

I didn't speak negatively of UT, all I did was mentioned the overall record between those three teams since it was central to my response. Other than your Auburn specifics, which you admittedly characterized as nitpicking, what exactly do you disagree with?

Nothing.  Just pointing out that your state is way too obsessed with football.
9330  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Down three scores on: October 28, 2014, 12:00:12 EDT

What about my post do you disagree with?

BG

That you should have such an inordinate amount of pride in football...it don't mean squat at the end of the day.

But if I wanted to nitpick something specific, UT has more SEC titles, a better SEC win percentage, more wins, and a better overall win percentage than Auburn. It's true Auburn holds a small advantage in the head to head, but we don't give up anything to them and I think in terms of overall SEC success, UT is still no. 2 behind bammer.  Granted, 3 n 4 aren't that far behind, but FWIW, we are the second most successful program in the SEC behind yours.

9331  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Down three scores on: October 27, 2014, 09:02:09 EDT

As far as your state-by-state economic comparison and potential impact of a program's success, I doubt there is such a correlation since the less prosperous state of Alabama actually produces not one but two state schools that outperform UT with both schools holding all-time winning records against the Vols. The state of Alabama actually out produces, in a college football winnining sense, far more economically successful states than Tennessee such as California, Texas and Florida. That competition between Alabama and Auburn yields a 365 day and a 24/7 effort to outperform the other. If they can outperform them, then they can exceed most any team.

And...sorry BG, but...

if only bammer had something else to feel good about, then maybe middle aged wimmen's wouldn't kick college boyz in the head, crazy ole nuts wouldn't poison trees, and ... peeps wouldn't get killed for saying the Heat is more important than bammer.

Truth hurts sometimes bro...

They not only have more money, they have more cash.

I have a client buying a $500,000 house this week and he called and asked if he could bring cash.

Uh,.....no.

I offered to bring my $58K downpayment in cash...as a joke.  The attorneys were not amused.
9333  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Bad news,Bama won,good news,we have a qb that gives us on: October 27, 2014, 06:43:01 EDT
A extra year in the program can might a big difference. Dobbs played the last 2 games with a hurt hand last year but he was the only option we had left.

I didn't hear his hand was hurt.  Thought that was Peterman.

You're aware that he doesn't shave his dam eyebrows? That he has a medical condition?

Of course I'm not aware.  Why even ask such a stupid question?

I know why, but it's against board rules to say.
9335  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: On paper, SC is a good matchup for us on: October 27, 2014, 06:39:38 EDT
Our entire defense was out coached by Lane.  We couldn't get pressure, we couldn't get coverage (Williams got pulled because of it in favor of Mosely the rest of the night and McNeil was pulled in favor of TK for at least 2 series in the 2nd quarter (McNeil's man who caught the dying duck at the 2).  The LBs were a non-factor all night, for the first time all year, really out of position a LOT.  BTW, the first play was a variation on a play we have not covered well all year, starting with the OU game.  I give Sutton credit, after getting toasted he flat played well the rest of the night.

Fortunately they don't have a WR like cooper.  Davis is a good back, but the combination of Yeldon and Henry is better.  I even give Sims the nod at QB.

Scoring D is only 100th in the country.  I like that.

Say you're on a trip in a friend's car, stop for a late night snack at a remote cconvenience store,  and find the battery is dead. Another car is there, but has no cables. Your friend says he doesn't have any either. You sit in the cold car, and eventually another automobile shows up, but also without jumper cables.

After they drive away, you check the trunk and notice he has cables. You're happy to find them, but a tad perturbed you wasted 2 hours.

I have a problem with your analogy though.  The battery wasn't dead for 2 hours.  It may have sputtered a few series against uga (warning light came on), then warning light comes on again at end of florida game.  Didn't finally die till bammer game.

In which case you only waited about 15 minutes.  Friend had a spare battery he wanted to try first, but it was also dead.  So now you are pissed he didn't go to jumper cables first, but there were no cars there anyway (down 27-0).

Whether or not Dobbs will depends on how he follows up Saturday's performance.  Keep in mine that he regressed after playing well in his first couple of games last year.  He was hideous against Vanderbilt.

Has he stopped shaving his dam eyebrows yet?  Then again, Halloween is just around the corner.
9339  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Game Report (Defense) on: October 27, 2014, 06:00:21 EDT
One game does not a season make.
I questioned the scheme at Oregon last year (yeah I know) because primarily how we were playing the safeties - we seemed to walk up the weak side safety and it burned us at least a half dozen times.  We did the same thing the next game but then it went away.

BTW, the two big TDs by Cooper were against Man defense - the 2nd Sutton just got beat, fell hook, line and sinker to the in fake.  Did he expect safety help over the top, I don't know but that was McNeil's side of the defense.
Arkansas assigned a safety to always cover cooper and it worked like a charm.  He was held to 2 catches and about 20 yards and bammer only scored 14.  Kiffin is  a guy that at times over relies on one weapon.  He did it with a star reciever at USC also.  If that guy has a bad game, look out.

Granted bammer had two weeks to scheme around having cooper double teamed.  I wonder if the success of their run game last week scared our staff?  Bottom line...cooper should have been double teamed the entire game, IMO.
9340  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Dobbs, UGA and UF on: October 27, 2014, 07:09:17 EDT
As I state below, no one, including our coaches, really had a clue what Dobbs would do this year until he actually played.  Well we found out, and it's good news.  Our QB problems are not solved, but Dobbs play is definitely a big positive.
9341  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Game Report (Defense) on: October 27, 2014, 07:06:27 EDT
Agree it was their worst performance...but I thought they did a good job recovering after the first 20 minutes.  For about the last 20 minutes of the game, we held them to 7.  Yes, bammer was definitely trying to run clock from the middle of the third on, but there were plenty of good plays by our D also, including a bunch of hurries on Sims, one sack, a couple good deflections and so forth.
9342  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: How are the high school teams shaping up? Anybody look unstoppable? Any teams in on: October 27, 2014, 07:03:28 EDT
Maryville has one of the best coaching staffs in America. Never seen a coaching staff that gets the most out of kids. I saw Maryville win titles with 170lbs linemen.i saw Maryville win with 3 starting linebackers 5'7 and 150lbs. Every now and then Maryville will have a Aaron Douglas,PattonRobinette or Dylan Jackson but The Program is built on hard working overachieving kids who take to coaching.

An MSU grad told me that those are the kids Mullen recruits at MSU.  Hard working 3 stars with a good attitude.  He realizes he can't get too many 5 stars to Starkvegas.  Has paid off for him, I guess.
9343  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Bad news,Bama won,good news,we have a qb that gives us on: October 27, 2014, 07:00:28 EDT
Agreed

The motion carries.  But he looked better last night than at any point last season, by a considerable margin IMHO.
9344  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Please explain to me on: October 27, 2014, 06:58:57 EDT
What I thought last night, and still think, is that no one, not even Butch Jones, knows what is going to happen until Dobbs actually goes in last night.  I seem to recall raving practice reviews of Jonathan Crompton in 2008, but then he was one of the biggest busts I can recall.

Also the points that we are breaking in a new OL above by a couple posters are well taken.  Why not start the season with an experienced guy while you are breaking in a new OL?  Why put the pressure on Dobbs from day 1?  Let Worley take the slings this year, let Dobbs continue to prepare for the future.

Finally, I also agree that while I was excited by Dobbs last year based on the bammer game, he kind of disappointed the rest of the year.  He did give us another option with his legs, but his passing was anemic to say the least.  Given that track record, I am not surprised Worley got the nod.  I am surprised Peterman was ahead of Dobbs, but since Butch announced on Thursday that they both would play, I am wondering if having Peterman ahead of Dobbs wasn't a bit of a subterfuge.  Who knows...

Having said all that, Dobbs clearly gave us a big spark and was much more effective than the post uga-injury Worley and Peterman.  I am excited to see how he plays against USCe.

I thought he looked better last night than at any point last season, and I hope that continues this coming week.
9345  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: On paper, SC is a good matchup for us on: October 27, 2014, 06:50:18 EDT
On paper, I think USC should win. But, on paper, you're right - we match up better with the chickens than with any SEC team we've faced thus far. What a freakin' relief to play an average defense and a team that isn't ranked in the Top 10 in the nation.

Yep...about time we get a schedule break.
9346  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Down three scores on: October 27, 2014, 06:45:09 EDT
OK then it was still a good call. The situation was with around 35 seconds to go in the half we had the ball with fourth and about 2-3 yds to get a first down. We are in field goal range and we let the clock run down to 3 secs then we kick the field goal. If we run a play quickly and don't make it then they get he ball with nearly half a minute to go some 80 yards with two time outs. Now before anyone says how unlikely they could do that remember how long their first possession lasted. There is considerable difference between being theee TDs down and two tds and a field goal. I defended his decision when it happened and I still do.

I kind of wondered about the call.  Heck, I had a friend who was really upset we didn't go for it at the 50 in the second quarter on 4th and 1 against Ole Miss, and I texted him during the game "okay this time we should go for it".

At the same time, it wasn't an awful call. We had a whole half left, and in fact we did close the gap to 27-17, which, by my math is two scores.  Heck, we held them to just 7 points in the entire second half in fact.  In retrospect it wasn't a terrible call at all.

Now why we didn't double cover Cooper in the first quarter...that one still mystifies me.

ESPN: Alex, write an article that will rile Vol fans and get as many hits as possible. It doesn't need to really illustrate truth or anything, just pretend like they still really care about the Kiffin nonsense.

Alex: But they seem to be over it, Butch Jones is a recruting BEAST!

ESPN: Screw that, make it up and post it right before gameday.

I didn't read it.

I could've sworn that my original post was something positive about it.  BTW, our class currently ranks #5, and that will probably improve.  Our class last year was  better than theirs, too.  You DO realize that they had been recruiting circles around us up until Butch arrived, right?
