To stop what happened in Connecticut from happening again we should stop asking how we prevent guys like that from getting their hands on guns and start focusing on how what made him tick the way he ticked. Once a person is able to rationalize killing two classrooms full of six-year-olds, the means they use to go about it is a moot point.
Our society's mindset has long been to blame the means rather than the cause. Until we get serious about the cause, things aren't going to change. It will be harder for law-abiding gun owners to purchase guns, they won't be able to purchase some of the guns they like and use, and it will cost them more to do so, with more red tape. And our kids will keep dying at the hands of madmen.
on the method, methods can and will be adapted, focus on how we as a society have reached this point of having so little value for life. I also see the media coverage as encouraging reluctant nutjobs to "go ahead and join in". When these depraved, sick, evil individuals have their name and face repeatedly broadcast 24/7 for days on end, those that are mentally unstable see the "fame" they too can attain and perhaps even more fame if they can outdo the last guy. Guns are the easy, superficial response that will produce no impact (we had the bans for years and there was no impact on gun violence....we know this but it's the easy feel good response).

supposedly went to school with Gruden and is still close to him. This guy said that he spoke to Gruden last week and he said that when Gruden doesn't want to divulge something, but doesn't want to lie about it, he will simply grin and wink. When this guy spoke to Gruden he was asked about the news in S.E. TN about the coaching search (this guy lives in Chattanooga I think it was) to which he replied "it's all about you". When the guy asked Gruden if it's true he said Gruden replied, "I can't say, wink, wink". I didn't speak to the guy, and I've been trying to ignore all rumors, but this caused me to really hope it's true. He's the only candidate that would instantly return excitement to Big Orange football and I'm dying for that return. I hesitated to pass along yet another rumor but my friend wouldn't lie and if he thought this guy was yanking his chain he wouldn't have passed it along, so take it for what it's worth. BTW, he said that Gruden told him it would be announced tomorrow so I guess we'll know if he's full of it or not soon enough.

terms with just how bad the talent level had gotten under Fulmer. Also, many want to say "he's had 3 years" but IMO the first year doesn't count, he was hired last minute and the recruiting class and staff he ended up with were mostly just bodies to fill openings. IMO he's had 2 years and needs at least 2 more to get the talent and depth to a truly competitive level. Your points about what happens if we begin firing/hiring coaches all over again are very valid IMO.

a while now, I just think he has a very good understanding of his arm strength, the ability of his WRs and where the ball needs to be thrown in relation to the pass pattern and position of the defender and is confident enough in his understanding to be willing to make throws that other college QBs wouldn't or shouldn't.
