Title: Great Performances: Hambone
Post by: VinnieVOL on July 24, 2013, 11:11:45 EDT
Originally an African-American plantation dance that was brought from West Africa by slaves who performed it during their gatherings when no rhythm instruments were allowed due to fear of secret codes hidden in the drumming (per Wiki), hambone or "Juba dance" is a fascinating art that very few can do correctly.  I think we all can agree that Steve Hickman provides the flare and showmanship one would look for in a hambone performance.

He really pours on the spicy sauce at the 1:03 mark.

Remember Bobby McFerrin, the "Don't Worry, Be Happy" guy?  This is what he's doing these days: interactive a cappella shows.  Audience participation is mandatory.  Apparently, most of this particular audience didn't get that memo. :dunno:

I was just being silly, but that's really interesting about McFerrin.
