He's a young man and probably a 100 times more mature than I was at his age.
And 10 times more mature than a pretty large percentage of adult serious football fans.
I hear you and appreciate that you are not criticizing him for his Twitter behavior. This is just an opportunity for me to point out that regardless of what he did, he has had to be far more thick skinned given the behavior of so many football fans than most people could handle.
How many of us get booed by crowds when people sitting on their fat butts don't think our best is good enough? How many of us have the joy of being publicly criticized for our every failing? How many of us get psychologically analyzed (and again publicly) by strangers who know almost nothing about the subject or us?
Frankly, it's amazing that any pro or major college athletes have anything but contempt for their fans.

decimated by injuries and in the next breath that if we don't win out the rest of the season Butch is a failure?
I don't get it. Most of our remaining schedule, while not on a par with the SEC best, are not bad teams. These games are not gimmes even if we were healthy. And the Vols are anything but healthy. Why shouldn't that be taken into account when assessing our progress?

I agree with your assessment. Obsessive about their team, and obsessive about being gracious to opposing fans.
Almost every stadium is mostly nice to the visitors, but it is the exceptions we notice. At A&M they take so much pride in this culture they built that it seems like even the people who want to be jerks don't dare act out.

It was an awesome game to watch with my 7 and 9 year old boys as it encouraged me to model:
1. Don't get down on your team when they fall behind. 2. Don't give up. 3. Don't get cocky when you pull ahead. 4. Don't lose your cool when you get your teeth kicked in at (what looks like) the end. 5. It ain't over until it's absolutely over.
I don't know if I would have been that cool had they not been there.
And they are now well prepared for our road trip to College Station.

IMO, Gauldin should apologize for the flop. A guy who in no way deserved it was ejected from the game due to someone else deliberately tricking the ref. That sucks.
I would much rather that is not how my alma mater plays the game.
And yes, I hate that trick in soccer and think less of the the pros as a result.

#1 is the '98 national championship. #2 is the '95 win over the tide. It's a fairly big drop to #4 Miracle at South Bend (1991)
Gawd I hated losing every damn year to the Gators, whether they were strong or weak. Getting that monkey off our backs beats out a lot of what should be much bigger victories when looked at from a less petty perspective.
Great job Vols! What a comeback!

All I know is that the second half gave me the most incredible sense of relief. I had just spent the previous hour convincing myself that another year of the streak wasn't the end of the world.
And then the smashing began!
It's nothing but celebration now. What the rest of the season brings right now seems almost irrelevant. Not that I want the team to feel that way, but as a fan who contributes no more to victories than sitting on my butt, this feels like we just cured cancer.

Your post contains a number of assumptions. The largest of which is that anyone on the hill is allowed to respond to any of the points in a public manner
I thought I mainly had questions, which yes, can reasonably be answered. And if the Chancellor, President and Athletic Director are unwilling to stick their necks out and not go with the lawyers' advice to circle the wagons and defend, defend, defend, then they are unworthy of their positions. I do not buy your apparent argument that no one has the authority to do what is right.

certain facts are easily discoverable if UT is serious about the truth.
1. Did Bowles assist a woman who said that she had been raped? 2. Was he assaulted by teammates for doing so? 3. Did Coach Jones actually respond to this conflict by giving Bowles "time away from the team" instead of the people who objected to his actions? 4. Did Coach Jones not take clear actions to address a hostile environment for a whistleblower?
If the answers to these questions are as indicated then I hope we would all insist on new leadership for the program or programs.
If UT is unwilling to treat these questions as critical to truthfully answer, then we the alumni should rise up in protest.

"But when the lights come on and the ball is kicked, he is no better than Dooley. If there is an opportunity to mismanage a game, he takes it."
I think it is still too early to say that. But what we do know is the first part of your post is correct. We have witnessed a major upgrade with Butch and are back to competitive status.
Given some patience, our future is much more likely bright than dim.

Sports / VTTW Message Board / How do I sign my sons up for this kind of abuse?

The kid's high school coach sounds like a dumbo, or at least an adult with a child's perspective to me.
After recently tearing up his knee for the second time, OSU is offering him a full ride scholarship where he can devote his time to classes and a real college life, not tear up his body anymore, the opportunity to earn a highly respected degree fully paid for by OSU despite Ohio not being at fault for his injury and the benefit of actually being able to walk at 40 without painkillers.
And he is getting screwed? I can see an eighteen year old brain with BS dreams of a long NFL career and retirement as a billionaire complaining, but we adults should know better.
My bet is given the quality of his mentorship this young man will turn down OSU's offer, transfer to another school, finish off his legs, drop out and spend the rest of his life trying to stay above $10 an hour.

I know this board is only read by us old farts who still use such crude media, but...
If some UT fraternity and some UK fraternity were to grow a couple pairs of balls they could reinstate the beer barrel tradition without the administrations having to sanction it. Just paint a barrel ala the old days and declare that it will be awarded c/o the relevant fraternity to whichever school wins.
It is a disgrace that the tradition was ever taken away and yes, the administrations will never buck the PC tide to reinstate a cool tradition.
But if we had some students with even a marginal amount of backbone and organizational capacity that wouldn't matter.
