Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: How would you play defense against the Vols?

I would start just rushing 4 with an occasional blitz to throw things off. If you can't get pressure with just the DL, then you send more.
I think you are correct. The key for us is to stay ahead of down and distance so we can keep all options open and keep the defense guesing. We have demonstrated throwing effectively out of the 2 TE set, which really limits the defense's options. If they start have some effectiveness against us look for us to go 2 TE. I believe they will attempt to disguise their coverages and zone blitz.

Clemson is seemingly more likely than Georgia Tech,FSU,NC State or Virginia Tech. I don't like Clempson either
Correct terminolgy for "Auburn with a lake" is "rat bastards" 101 and/or droner can provide the background at thier lesiure. Having had the misfortune to have to spend time there, I tend to agree. Though I have to admit that the Tiger Town Inn has certain, err, "advantages"

This year's squad is smoking on offense and getting better on defense. I think Tennessee plays tough against a more experienced Florida team but falls a bit short,35-28. I like the progress the team is making and think they can win 8 games. I hope when Georgia fires Richt for going 6-6 they don't come after Coach Dooley.
Welcome to the board!

Sent you an e-mail, but not sure it sent b/c pc crapped out at the same time. I'll be down there if you want to get together. I'm planning on stopping by Albert's tent.
I probably need to get over to the VS and chek in with Albert as well as O&B. I usually try to go by both tailgates. Assuming nominal departure from bubbaville at 0700 I should be in the area around 1100.

Mom came through surgery fine -- I spoke with her a while ago (still drunk and funny as hell -- Mom is always a right when coming out of anesthesia!). She'll be fine.
Barb's heart surgery went fine and she's in ICU, but they've already taken the breathing tube out.
Wonderful news on both counts -- thanks for all the thoughts and prayers! Now to get Dean through his ordeal later this week without any issues!
Then I can think about the UF game!
good news! Thanks for the update.

After watching the replay a few thoughts 1) The VOLS have found themselves a FB - Bartholomew flat kicked ass Saturday. He was hitting people and they stayed hit. He created two holes that Poole didn't exploit (running play #1 being one of the two). 2) If Maggitt started at DE he would give us the best pass rush off the edge since Little. Maggitt essentially played DE the 2nd half in passing situations, though he was the NT on one play and he walked around the DL a couple of times. 3) I'm less concerned with the OL. We had fewer individual breakdowns after the 1st quarter. It will be difficult to run on the croc front 7 but I think we will run enough to keep them honest. 4) Teague is playing well at corner. 5) Lanier played the best corner opposite Teague Saturday with Evans a close 2nd IMO. That being said, I still believe that if Randolph continues to develop we may see Wagner move back to corner. 6) Couch played well, better than the first game. 7) The WRs are running some nice routes and appear to have at least some of the option routes down. Roger had one catch I believe had the option of going inside and that was where Rogers wanted to go but the defender overplayed the inside and he cut outside for the completion. 8) Dallas got more snaps this game than the first. Not sure he knows where to line up yet but he knows what to do after the snap. He may be ready to step up when we get to game 4 after the bye. 9) We don't have enough DL players but the ones we have are very good. Bohanon improved considerably this game. We very much were playeing situational packages Saturday. 10) We have a shot at the crocs. We have to play better than the first two games but with the skill players we have on both sides of the ball we have a shot.

Or, alternatively speaking, is there a good sports bar around the area to watch some of the game? I heard the party's at CO's house, but I cannot confirm this . I tend to watch away games from the stadium where the game is being played. If you don't mind a bit of drive time, I hear TStud throws good parties ...

It was better on Saturday for me than it has been in a while. Texting and phone calls are on the same network, data is different and data is where it's tough. At the beginning of the game I couldn't hit ESPN or the board but it eased up towards halftime.
I didn't even try after the fiasco last week. Plus, for some reason I was back to doing what I used to do during games and watching units for a series (DL, OL, WR, etc) and not watching the ball all the time. Also, I was questioning why the heck the Pride didn't do a 9/11 themed show??????????????????????? I mean, Ghost Busters? For real??

Bartholomew actually started this past Saturday from what I heard on the postgame show. I think maybe Fugate let things go to his head a little and just needed to be humbled. We are going to need him. We've always needed two FBs.
Bartholomew started and played ~95% of the snaps. I didn't see Fugate in the game on offense till the 2nd half. Bartholomew had at least two pancakes Saturday (I hope to watch the DVR replay tonight).

So far Bray has impressed me by being decisive and getting rid of the ball quickly for the most part. Again, you have to consider the competition. But whether or not there was a pass rush, the ball has been getting out of there pretty quickly.
A couple of passes against Montana he held onto the ball. He did not have that issue against Cinti. The thing that impressed me against Cinti was how early he was releasing the ball - several times before the receiver came out of his break. Very good anticipation on timing, though at least once he and Rogers were a bit out of sync but even then the ball was thrown where only Rogers could have caught the ball.

Wagner had a nice defended pass on their 3rd down play that led to their field goal. Vareen played the pass very well yesterday (also against Montana). Randolph was out of position on the long TD run. It was interesting that Vareen missed the tackle but Dooley gave his lecture to the secondary group after the play.

Once they adjusted to Cincinnati's hurry-up approach, they played well. Take away a touchdown off a fumble, Pead's 65-yard-run that came after breaking two tackles at the line of scrimmage, and Cincy has just one sustained touchdown drive. (Even then they benefited from a VERY questionable pass interference penalty.) All the talk surrounding this game was about Cincy's high-powered offense. I don't really like our bend-but-don't-break approach; I was begging for more blitzes. But that is Wilcox's approach and it's hard to argue its effectiveness on a day like this.
As excited as I am about our passing attack, our defense looks like it might be much improved from last year.
When the defender has established a position and the receiver initiates contact, how the hell is that PI??

A great day for tailgaiting and football! Offense: QB - Only the 2nd QB to throw over 400 yards as a VOL. Bray is on fire. He is playing with great confience and under control. He still has great confidence in his arm, as the 2nd TD pass to D Rogers proved. Probably should not have been thrown but it dripped mustard all the way into Rogers' hands it was thrown so hard. He is not "there" yet but we do have a confident gunslinger playing for us. The pass to Huntr for a TD was a thing of beauty. He is throwing the ball before the receivers are coming out of their breaks - he has great timing working with the two primary receivers. He was off ][ much on two thrws to Rogers. RB - Poole, for the most part, ran far better today. We seem to run better ot of the two TE set, though #39 was pancaking people in front of Poole. The run of the day though was the late run by Lane - he would not give up. On the very first run Poole went right when the hole was left but after that he ran well. WR - W I do not remember a receiver having as good a pair of hands that Hunter has since Sievers. We also used the TE a LOT today. Very effective. OL - Played better for the most part. IMO the week link was LG, though there were a coule of breakdowns on the right side. Not a lot went wrong on offense today. Losing Dallas Thomas was probably the only real loss - hope his knee is ok. Defense: DL - played well today. M. Jackson was a force all day and Maggitt was a force after Martin's inkury. We used Maggitt outside and inside in passing situations. Couch played a lot and played well, came up big in the short yardage situations where we STUFFED them. Smith had a good day. LB - A. Johnson had a huge day. Vareen whiffed on a tackle on their long TD run but after that played well. A.J. Johnson Didn't pop up on my radar screen all day. DBs - hit or miss all day. Coleman got burned again. Evans didn't play as much but I think played well. Teague played well today and tackled well. Wagner played well as the 5th back, better than when he was at safety. Randolph started at FS and I think by the time we play the pups he will be the starting FS and Wagner will be starting at corner opposite Teague. Lanier got several snaps at corner and what I thought was a bogus PI call. Special teams: Kockoffs were much, much better - two touchbacks nand of the rest, all but one were at between the Goalline and the 5, oh and a nice on-sides kick. Punting, only one but Darr's [unts drag their tail and lose yardage. All but one of his warmups did the same. One good punt return wipped out by a penalty. KO returns were ok, nothing to write home about. Coaching - one pair of grade A large ones for calling the early on-sides kick The staff made some excellent adjustments on the fly. Good game.
