That a media guy from Dallas said that Mike Hamilton's final two after Fulmer were Kiffin and Gary Patterson and both wanted the job, but Hamilton thought Patterson was too much like Fulmer. Patterson resented that because Fulmer was someone he looked up to, and when Kiffin left and he became the top target, he told Hamilton to stuff if.

That may well have happened.  On the other hand, I was told by a former UT football player (several weeks before Fulmer was fired) that he heard from certain people that Lane Kiffin would be the next football coach at UT.

At the time, I didn't think much of this.  When Kiffin was indeed hired, I asked this guy where he had gotten his information.  He did not tell me.  So, did he (and therefore people inside the program) already know?  Did he make a lucky guess?  Who knows?

Hamilton could eff up a diamond,that sounds about right for Him! Tennessee would be in a good spot now if Patterson was Coach,DAMN IT!

Also heard that Brian Kelly really wanted the UT job. Wearing an orange tie, and ready to go. Wow, what an absolute idiot Hamilton was missing coaches like these.

Yeah, Kelly really wanted the job. Ugh. That having been said the apathy that year was awful. At least people care enough to complain now. I think Hamilton wanted a splash hire to get some buzz. Kiffin definitely generated that with his many comments - some of which I found entertaining.
