Powell was HUGE when I played against them back in the mid 80s.  Fortunately, they were slow.. :)

Not these days, they have speed to burn
They can take any play and take it to the house, as they demonstrated to Halls tonight
Oh, if Tennessee tackled HALF as good as Powell, they would be undefeated

Ended up about as I thought it would.

The only thing better than routing Hauls is doing it in their house.

The Panthers still control Emory Road and Beaver Creek.

What's behind Powell's resurgence? Simply a good run of talent, or is Lowe that good a coach?

A couple of factors.

Matt is a hell of a football coach.  His passion to win is greater than any other high school coach I have been around, and you know I have been around some great ones.  He flat out tells anybody who wants to know that his job is to win football games and that's what he was hired to do.

Secondly, he's put a really good staff together.  And last spring he hired the former head of Fulton's feeder program as an assistant, after that assistant had been at CAK for a year.

It's no coincidence that Powell and Central have seen a resurgence, while Fulton is sitting at 0-fer the year with Maryville on deck for them.  Fulton had it's pick of the litter because of its magnet school status in Knox County for 20 years. West also had an advantage with its IBE program.  That's what got the likes of Nathan Cottrell, one of the fastest kids I have ever seen come out of Knox County, and others to West that got them a state championship.   Now, with the transfer policy in Knox County what it is - there are many criteria that qualify a student for one - and by TSSAA rules as long as you start at a school as a freshman you are eligible no matter what zone you live in - it's a very competitive situation for all sports.  And every single public school in Knox County plays that game in sports, and not just in football.  It's across the board.

And for the record, I am all for choice in education for parents and kids.  Competition makes everybody work harder.
