On a Tennessee Saturday night!

I don't get it. A song about the state of Tennessee sung by University of Alabama fans?

Is it just because the group Alabama put the song on their album? It still doesn't make sense. It was written by a Tennessee native while driving through Tennessee.

How did this ridiculous tradition get started?

That's what the wiki says. I'm impressed by the number of other songs its mentioned in, I never had heard it until we beat them in 2022.  But then, I'm not a country music fan.  At all.

I?m not much of a country fan either. But I do know that thanks to Morgan Wallen, Conner Smith, Kenny Chesney and others, songs about UT and UT football have basically become their own subgenre. Our gameday playlists will never lack for material.
