I wrote an angry email to ESPN, and they responded by linking me to this:

They claim he was not suspended, FWIW. 

Also, here is a lengthy article by the ESPN Omsbudsman, who does claim that ESPN screwed up it's coverage of the James-Leach affair during the Alamo Bowl:

I read that story on the Poynter Institute's website over the weekend and got a good laugh out of it. Talk about playing games with semantics. That article talks more about "erroneous" reporting by SportsbyBrooks and those who picked up his story and ran with it than it talks about ESPN's obvious shortcomings. If a guy is asked to stop contributing to the network, it isn't a "non-suspension." He is suspended. Period. There's no official definition that says you have to be told to stay away from the office in order for it to be called a "suspension." Besides, some of Feldman's closest friends in the business were on Twitter the day it went down playing a part in the "FreeBruce" campaign. He wouldn't have let his buddies in the loop on what was happening?

The bottom line is that ESPN, after giving the guy the go-ahead to write the book, started panicking when excerpts of that book started to emerge last week. They acted inappropriately, as they're prone to do, and when they realized they stepped in it, backed up and started trying to play damage control.

As much grief as ESPN brought on Pearl, they should introduce Craig James as "Jesse James Who In No Small Part Helped Bring The Death Penalty to SMU."  :biggrin:
