Title: Great performances: Vocals Post by: Black Diamond Vol on July 24, 2013, 02:31:48 EDT Since we have a little time left in the "dead period" (and I'm off today), let's do some music. We'll start with some great voices:
Led Zeppelin, "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", live in 1969. What more needs to be said? When it comes to vocals, Robert Plant is the GOAT if you ask me. http://www.youtube.com/v/HFIORuvNa9I Grace Potter, IMO, has the sexiest female voice going right now. She's the closest thing you'll find to Ann Wilson these days. http://www.youtube.com/v/Vypp5l-LnKM A little slice of 80's cheese. Say what you want about Hall & Oates, but Darryl could belt one out in his prime. This original, unreleased, soulful version of "Everytime You Go Away" blows the hit cover version out of the water. (Side note: I saw H&O in concert in 1984 or thereabouts. Only act I've ever seen that did live fadeouts. If a song faded out on record, they faded it out on stage. Weird.) http://www.youtube.com/v/NR54rkz1sek Up next: Guitars. Title: Re: Great performances: Vocals Post by: VinnieVOL on July 24, 2013, 02:41:30 EDT Jay Buchanan of Rival Sons is the best voice in Rock right now IMHO:

Title: Re: Great performances: Vocals Post by: Stogie Vol on July 24, 2013, 03:03:10 EDT Lzzy Hale from Halestorm deserves a mention. Many of her covers surpass the originals, imo.

YES, jaw dropping vocals. If you want to hear something great click this. :wow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjhkMfubxvQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjhkMfubxvQ) and definitely this....these are two great performances! Title: Re: Great performances: Vocals Post by: murfvol on July 24, 2013, 05:44:44 EDT This discussion begins and ends with Whitney Houston and Roy Orbison, but Morrisey, Ann Wilson and David Coverdale deserve shout-outs. I contend Paul Stanley is seriously underrated. Seriously underrated.
George Jones must also be mentioned. I'll locate the requisite links at some point. I contend Paul Stanley is seriously underrated. Seriously underrated. George Jones must also be mentioned. I'll locate the requisite links at some point. Paul Stanley certainly can't do what he used to vocally, but early 80's he was just about untouchable on Creatures of the Night and Lick It Up. I can't either and gave up trying. Title: Re: Great performances: Vocals Post by: 101stDad on July 24, 2013, 07:08:54 EDT I can't either and gave up trying. I think it has something to do with an ailment called Oldfartism, from which there is no known cure. Title: Re: Great performances: Vocals Post by: Black Diamond Vol on July 24, 2013, 07:12:55 EDT No, you aren't. Maybe because I didn't specify the size for the Flash tag. Title: Re: Great performances: Vocals Post by: murfvol on July 24, 2013, 08:14:16 EDT I'm a huge Steve Earle fan, but I am not about to claim he has a great voice. He does have a very effective voice.
And yeah, Allison Krause is amazing. There has been one massive omission. John Waite is right below Roy Orbison. I'll also give a shout-out to Joe Lynn Turner and Lou Gramm. Title: Re: Great performances: Vocals Post by: 101stDad on July 24, 2013, 08:37:51 EDT I'm a huge Steve Earle fan, but I am not about to claim he has a great voice. He does have a very effective voice. I didn't interpret this to be about great voices, but great vocal performers. Guess that just depends on how one looks at it. Title: Re: Great performances: Vocals Post by: murfvol on July 24, 2013, 08:40:14 EDT I think that's a valid take. Using that criteria I'd toss Tracy Chapman into the mix too.
Title: Re: Great performances: Vocals Post by: PirateVOL on July 24, 2013, 09:01:05 EDT I keep seeing references to a fantasy band: Black Oak Arkansas
I mean a big song for them was When Electricity came to Arkansas and we all know that isn't true ... :wtf: Title: Re: Great performances: Vocals Post by: 101stDad on July 24, 2013, 09:18:00 EDT I keep seeing references to a fantasy band: Black Oak Arkansas I mean a big song for them was When Electricity came to Arkansas and we all know that isn't true ... :wtf: Black Oak Arkansas was flat out awesome - one of the best bands live bands I have ever seen. (In my opinion the most talented and versatile in rock and it's not close) Could have picked any one of a whole bunch of songs that showcase his talent, but you all know who he is.
http://www.youtube.com/v/r4UNoECibYk Agree on Allison Krauss - incredible and sounds just like that live. Union Station also flawless live. Thorogood in a vocal performance thread? Hey whatever man.. Edit: Missed 101st mentioning Freddie already. Salute. Title: Re: Great performances: Vocals Post by: murfvol on July 26, 2013, 05:10:55 EDT Good Queen selection Orange Rampage
