Watching him play, it didn't take long to figure out that he is not recovered from the ACL surgery. He had such a cumbersome brace on that he was, in reality, trying to play on one leg.
Too bad really. He seems to have all the tools to be a very good spread QB, but his body just didn't want to cooperate. That said, UT's defense did a great job of limiting his options. Very encouraged, but it was Utah State. This week against Arkansas State should be much of the same. We'll know how much progress we've really made the following two games. And another that said, it is obvious that we've drastically increased the speed on the defensive side of the football. That is a huge step in the right direction. Keeton also has little in the way of a supporting cast, though Natson has the potential to be a playmaker if they can put some muscle on him. Also, while we are all justifiably worried about the OL performance, the front 7 was really the strength and experience of that Utah State team (outside of Keeton). There are all-conference and potential NFL players in that front 7. Now, we're going to face much better fronts than that down the road but I think our OL in its first game should have been expected to struggle at least a little against that front. I think we'll see improvement there, but it's going to remain our biggest weakness. I thought the experts picking USU were crazy, but I was expecting a 10-14 point win and would have been happy with that. I was encouraged for sure. They had most if not all of the LB corps back, but the DL lost 2 of 3 from last year. Yes, they have one LB and the returning DE that might play on Sunday, so pretty good, but I think losing 3 DL from a 3-4 still set them back a bit. I am sort of hopeful that their strength at LB was what slowed our run game a bit, and I am really happy with the perfomrance of the entire team including the OL in this first game, but will will face much better fronts IMO. |
