Title: Just how many ways are there to jump into a freaking pool?
Post by: Black Diamond Vol on August 12, 2012, 03:12:59 EDT
It's no wonder that China is up so high in the Medal Count.  There are approximately 256 unique diving events (I exaggerate only slightly), and there's a Chinese winning gold (and silver, usually) in every single one.

Seriously, it's diving- every single night, in primetime.  Dammit, NBC, show some sports that America cares about. :frown:

Don't forget the 235 badminton and the 450 ping-pong! Yet, baseball and softball are NOT included! :bird:

There isn't much else show.  If you think diving is bad consider that China has 8 medals in BADMINTON.

Sheesh. you guys will complain about anything. You think diving has a lot of separate events? How about swimming? You have four different strokes (Freestyle, back stroke, butterfly and breast stroke). Each held at different distances. And then you also have medleys, relays and medley relays. ANd multiply by 2 as both men and women compete. Where would the US medal count be without swimming?

All I know is, swimming ended a week ago.  Diving has been going on constantly since the opening ceremonies.  My only complaint is, why does NBC have to show it every night?  After a while, it just gets repetitive. :frown:

Yeah, that's true. There are probably too many rounds. I don't know exactly how many, but you have your preliminaries, then it cuts down to a certain number, then I think it cuts down to another number, then the finals. Seems like more rounds then most of the other sports.

Badminton and Ping pong are pretty huge sports in Asia and parts of Europe. That's a hefty amount of people who like the sport. We may not think of them much more than as recreational sports, but you might want to look at how people around the world view different things.

As far as diving, hell, let's beat them. We used to be pretty good at it. Remember Greg Loughanis?

All of my heroes are table tennis players. Zoran Primorac, Jan-Ove Waldner, Wang Tao, Jorg Rosskopf and of course Ashraf Helmy. I even have a life-size poster of Hugo Hoyama on my wall. And the first time I left Pennsylvania was to go to the hall of fame induction ceremony of Andrzej Grubba.

It's a quote from The Office.  Which means that a couple hours after Revolver and Vinnie get on here tomorrow, this thread will be about 5 pages long. :toothless:

Once I’m officially Regional Manager, my first order of business will be to demote Jim Halpert. So I will need a new number two. My ideal choice? Jack Bauer. But he is unavailable. Fictional. And overqualified.

There are 40 rules all Schrute boys must learn by age 5. Rule #17- There are 3 things you never turn your back on- bears, men you have wronged, and a dominant male turkey during mating season.

I lived in Asia for two years, out on the economy. I am quite familiar with how they view things, and I still don't think ping pong (although an impressive skill) qualifies as athletics.

It's a sport, and it requires quickness, hand eye coordination, and a lot of practice to be really good. It doesn't require one to be a great athlete, for sure, but there's no requirement in the Olympics for sports to require that. Hell, Golf is going to be an Olympic sport in Rio, and it doesn't require awesome athleticism either.

We can agree on that!

Learn your rules
You've got to learn your rules
Cause if you don't
You'll be eaten in your sleep... :dielaughing:

In the Schrute family we believe in a five-fingered intervention.  Awareness. Education. Control. Acceptance. And punching.

Whenever I'm about to do something, I ask myself, "Would an idiot do this?".  And if the answer is yes, I do not do that thing.

Depends on whether or not there is water in the pool......

When Michael was in charge, this place was like the Roman Empire. And the Wild West. And war-torn Poland. There was just, a lot going on. So what you wore to work was the least of anybody's worries. And in the chaos, I soared.

I would love to see someone who knew they were out of the medal race just get up there and do a cannonball. They would be my all time Olympic hero.
