Title: Top 5 SEC football rivalries Post by: Clockwork Orange on September 01, 2011, 02:07:51 EDT This is motivated by a discussion on the VS last night in which a couple of us had to defend the Third Saturday in October as a significant rivalry. So that got me thinking this morning . . . what are the Top 5 best rivalries in the SEC? Another way to look at it . . . if the SEC has to change its scheduling, what are the top 5 series it should bend over backward not to interrupt?
Mine: 1) The Iron Bowl (Auburn - Alabama) 2) The Egg Bowl (Mississippi - Mississippi State) 3) The Third Saturday in October (Tennessee - Alabama) 4) The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party (Georgia - Florida) 5) The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry (Georgia - Auburn) Personally I think the SEC would lose too much tradition if it is forced to schedule away any of the above, so I hope it works out a system that can keep them all. Thoughts? Title: Re: Top 5 SEC football rivalries Post by: 10EC on September 01, 2011, 02:25:20 EDT That is my list too. Those are the biggies. Others? Maybe:
Arkansas v LSU Vandy v Tennessee (I could care less) Kentucky v Tennessee (I could care less) South Carolina v Arkansas (not sure if they consider it a rivalry) Georgia v South Carolina (hasn't that alays been an early season game?) Title: Re: Top 5 SEC football rivalries Post by: Clockwork Orange on September 01, 2011, 02:59:00 EDT Georgia v South Carolina (hasn't that alays been an early season game?) Yes . . . even though that 's not a rivalry with a lot of history, it's become a really, really good early season game. That's a fun series. Title: Re: Top 5 SEC football rivalries Post by: VinnieVOL on September 01, 2011, 03:14:16 EDT I can't believe you had to defend the historical significance of the 3rd Sat in Oct.
Then again you were debating with a fan base of a program with no historical significance... Thoughts? I think your list is spot on. The instate nature of the top two is significant and too much for the Third (Fourth) Saturday to overcome. Nothing but net on that one. One rivalry not mentioned is "The September Classic" UT -Auburn - you young folks don't remember what a great rivalry it was. Some fans think it has to be an in state rivalry to mean something. That Auburn series was hard to lose. Some great games. The downpour with Reggie Cobb was among the best. That and spanking Bo. Yeah, it's a big deal in the state of Mississippi, but in terms of historical significance, it doesn't really register.
