I keep hearing that the AD and HC are lacking control. Control over what? When Hart was asked, he evaded the question. What control is Hart wanting or needs that UT administration has over him?
I want specifics if anyone knows. I hate when someone does not answer a legitimate question and uses "Well this is not the time or place to address that." My question is "When is the time and place and will you answer it then?"
This just appears to me to be a power struggle and pissing contest between egos. Since Hart will not talk, what is the answer?

Why are you asking this question on a messageboard where posters are just pot-stirrers and rumormongers? (Sorry; couldn't resist.)

Would it be possible for the Head Football Coach to be Athletic Director also? I think that was the way it was at Georgia with Vince Dooley in the 1980s

That's the way it was with Derek Dooley when he was at LaTech. He's got the experience...wanna bring him back?

Just asking. So many people are willing to give Gruden carte blanche, I just thought someone could answer. So many people are blaming Cheek and the academic side for our decline, what is this nebulous control you speak of? I want specific examples to form a decision. Otherwise all I can assume is that people are blowing smoke and seeking to blame others for doing the jobs they are assigned to do. I am sure there is one informed soul out there willing to educate. Someone please expound on the control issue.
What are the disadvantages with other SEC schools Hart is complaining about because he has never explained what they are?
Does Hart want to report to UT President rather than Cheek?
Does Hart want to be the one deciding which athlete can be admitted and waive admission requirements?
What does control over Thorton Center have to do with running the AD?

From what i have been told, that the Athletics dept(COACHES and anyone associated with athletics) cannot be there, nor can have any contact with the academic staff regarding players, studying habits, class attendance, grades as this can sway decisions and put pressure on professors to give athletes grades or risk your job??...........which would explain alot about the last 6 years or so. I could be wrong about this, but it was explained to me as such part of the problem. No work or communication between academics and athletics?????

well, he should report to the president instead of the faculty senate, which Cheek actually serves. The AD would like to return to some form of control of the Thorton Center, which the academic side controls 100%. We are NOT playing on a level playing field with rhe rest of the SEC relative to academics - see Lanier Just some of the issues

Thanks Pirate. I have a better grasp now. I think Hart should be fighting to wrestle some oversight of Thorton back. AD needs to have some line of communications. What Mensa candidate let Cheek be in charge any way?

I have heard the things you mention as well as admission standards and $$$. The $$$ seems to have been addressed, the other things need to be as well. I believe the BOT met on November 9 and did change Hart's chain of command. I assume it was for the better, but WDIK. If only there were an attorney on the board. http://bot.tennessee.edu/docs/2012/110912_fullboard.pdfClick tab N on the above, below is a partial: THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE BOARD OF TRUSTEES ACTION ITEM DATE: November 9, 2012 COMMITTEE: Advancement and Public Affairs CAMPUS/UNIT: All ITEM: Amendment of the UT-UTFI Affiliation and Services Agreement to Change the Reporting Line for Athletics Development Personnel at UT Knoxville RECOMMENDATION: Approval PRESENTED BY: Joseph A. DiPietro, President Johnnie Ray, Vice President for Development and Alumni Affairs and President and CEO of UT Foundation, Inc. In 2010, the University realigned the reporting structure for the UT Knoxville Athletics Department so that it now reports to the Chancellor of UT Knoxville rather than to the President of the UT System. To align the reporting structure for the development efforts of the Athletics Department with the reporting structure for the Department as a whole, Chancellor Cheek proposed that athletics development personnel report through the UT Knoxville Vice Chancellor for Development rather than directly to the President of the Foundation. This new alignment will build strong collaboration between the academic and athletic fundraising teams at UT Knoxville. President DiPietro, on behalf of the University, and Johnnie Ray, on behalf of the Foundation, strongly support Chancellor Cheek’s proposal.

Another issue is that most other schools charge al athletes in-state tuition while UT charges the athletes from out of state out of state tuition, costing the AD thousands extra each year.
